“Good morning, Chloe.” Nurse Betty turned in her chair and handed a coffee to me. “Sorry, we still only have coffee, but the good news is Dr. Hawthorne asked his assistant to bring in tea for you.

“Either I am starting to like coffee or I’m still asleep and it’s a dream, and we get to leave here today.” I scanned the donuts on the counter. “Because of this coffee, I’ll take four chocolate frosted, please, and some milk for Sophie.”

“Sweetie, take the whole box. We’re so sorry for you and Sophie. It must have been a tough year but, on the bright side, you get to hang out with us more and I, personally, love having you around.” Betty and the other nurse, Alice, smiled, then Betty pushed the box of donuts at me. “Now you make sure Dr. Hawthorne has a donut. That boy doesn’t eat enough.”

“Betty, I’m going to miss you the most, but I won’t miss that bed/chair in there.” I accepted the box of donuts.

I stuck the milk bottle in the pocket of my robe. “You guys are so sweet to share with us. You’ve made her stay as happy an experience as you could, and I thank you.”

“How about we get you a real bed for the rest of your stay? Then maybe you’ll walk straighter. I could swear you were taller when you got here a few days ago.” Nurse Alice laughed at Betty’s joke. “I’ll be in to go over the newest instructions and new medication in about an hour. Dr. Hawthorne wants her to have more breathing treatments. Maybe you’ll get to leave tomorrow.”

“Thanks, Alice. You know where we’ll be until then.” I raised my coffee cup in a toast.

Sophie was standing on the bed holding up her bears when I walked in.

“Just what are you doing?” I asked from the doorway.

“Mummy, I thought you left me so Benjamin told me to lift him up so he could look out the window for you.” Sophie plopped back down on the bed. “I’m glad you didn’t leave me.”

“Sophie, why would you even think I would ever leave you, silly bilby?” I crossed to her bed and sat down. “I brought you the whole box of donuts from the nurses.”

“Did you bring moo juice too?” Sophie asked, studying all the donuts. “Benjamin likes the donut with the pink on top.”

“Benjamin has a lot to say this morning, doesn’t he? You eat however many donuts you want while I get dressed.” I clicked on the television and searched for cartoons.

“Are you getting dressed so we can go home?” Sophie asked between licks of icing on her fingers. “I don’t want to go home, but I do want to leave here.”

“No baby, we have to stay a little longer. Then we can go to Aunt Mia’s house for a few days before we go home,” I answered to an already distracted Sophie.

“But can’t we stay here with Aunt Mia? I miss her,” Sophie begged. “And I gotta stay here ‘cause Miss Victoria needs grandkids. How can we leave now?”

“You can still talk to Aunt Mia and Miss Victoria on facetime whenever you want.” I grabbed myself a donut and climbed in bed with Sophie. “And we can visit another time.”

“Okay,” Sophie agreed hesitantly.

“What about Mr. Hawthorne?” I asked.

“Umm, you mean the one married to Miss Victoria?” Sophie asked. “That’s her husband.”

“Oh, of course. How did I not know that?” I apologized. “When you finish your donuts, would you like to watch tv or play a game?”

“I like to play games,” Sophie yawned. “But I’m tired. Maybe a game after I rest.”

I cuddled up with Sophie and we both fell back asleep.

Chapter 49

Trey

Istopped into Sophie’s room before making my rounds. I wanted to deliver breakfast to her in person. They were both sound asleep, so I left the bag and backed out of the room.

I hope I can let her go home soon.

Betty handed me Sophie’s chart, letting me know Parker had already been in to see her this morning.

“He wanted you to have him paged when you got here.” Betty hit the intercom, calling for Dr. Parker Hawthorne.

“You’re always ahead of me, Betty. I should marry you,” I teased. “I have a man for you if you’re interested.”
