“Oh Dr. Hawthorne, you’re such a tease and you’re my son’s age.” Betty patted my hand leaning on the desk. “I do think you need to get married someday soon, too.”

“You’re dodging Betty. You’ve been alone for too long and work too much.” I stared at her, smiling. “When’s the last time you went on a date?”

“You’re a pediatrician, Dr. Hawthorne, not a doctor of love,” Betty scolded. “When did you go out with a nice girl last?”

“Ouch! I go out with nice girls,” I argued. “Don’t look at me like that. I do.”

“Not those girls I see you with in the papers. I mean a nice girl, like Chloe.” Betty grinned.

“I see what you’re up to now, but no, she is only here for a short visit.” I lifted another chart and turned almost into Parker.

Parker walked out of the emergency staircase. “You finally made it to work, I see.”

“Don’t make me tell Mom you’re picking on me,” I laughed. “What did you need from me regarding Sophie?”

“I don’t like that she’s so fatigued and feverish,” Parker went on without a response to my joke. “I ordered an echocardiogram and chest x-rays.”

“Alright, I was hoping to be able to let her go home by tomorrow. So, let’s see what the x-ray shows,” I agreed. “I think, since they are staying at your place, she will be in good hands.”

“That’s okay with me, as long as the echo is good. Like you said, she’ll be at my house anyways.” Parker grinned. “I heard you stayed here late last night.”

“You have bad information, little brother. I was here for a while. Mrs. Collins was here to deliver her triplets, but the contractions stopped so I went home and drank a whole six pack.” I shook my head at myself. “I haven’t done that in a long time, and this morning a big bird wanted to eat me.”

“Oh, is that your excuse for getting to work so late?” Parker closed the chart he was looking at. “What’s got you so crazy that you drank all that beer?”

“Not sure. Maybe this whole mail-order bride thing.” I waved him away from the nurse station. “It worked for you, though, so I thought I’d try it.”

The intercom interrupted. “Dr. Henry Hawthorne to Labor and Delivery.”

Parker stared at me long enough to make me uncomfortable. “You should do it.”

“You think?”

Chapter 50

Chloe

Iwoke two hours later when Betty came in to get morning vitals. The smell of fresh bacon made my mouth water.

“Where is that smell coming from?” I walked over and sniffed out in the hallway. “It’s not out there.”

“Dr. Trey stopped by earlier and left you some breakfast made by his personal chef.” Betty went about checking vitals. “Then he got called to Labor and Delivery.”

“Darn, I’m sorry I missed him, and apparently Parker too.” I crinkled my nose. “I guess they’ll let me know what’s up soon.”

“Dr. Trey may be in Delivery or Neonatal all day. He had triplets being delivered.” Betty closed the chart and headed for the door. “Our little miss is doing a lot better, so you stop worrying yourself so much. And eat that food. Edward is a great cook.”

Betty patted my shoulder, then quietly left the room. I found the bag of food and curled up in the big chair by the windows.

Betty wasn’t just exaggerating. The food was delicious. He has a chef that makes him breakfast?

“Good arvo. Sorry it took so long to get here.” Mia rushed into the room looking at her watch. “It’s already two o’clock.”

“What’s the big rush, Mia?” I asked from my chair by the window. “Why do you have a wheelchair?”

“I brought this wheelchair to escort Sophie to her tests.” Mia waved for Sophie to get in. “Come on now, we have to hurry.”

“What’s the big rush, Mia? I don’t know anything about these tests today.” I stood and walked closer. “Who ordered them and why?”
