“Chloe, I’m sorry, I thought Trey would have told you. Parker wants to look one more time at the valve to be certain it’s okay.” Mia went around the wheelchair and hugged me. “It’s just to be sure, so don’t be afraid. You want to know for sure before you have to go back to Sydney anyways, right?”

“Mummy, are we going back now?” Sophie asked, getting Benjamin situated next to her. “I didn’t get to see Aunt Mia’s house yet.”

“No, silly willy, we’re not going back yet. We still have two more weeks.” I tucked her other teddy in with her. “Okay, let’s go get a test.”

Betty handed us each a popsicle as we went by the nurse station. “See you when you get back.”

“I wonder why Trey didn’t come tell us himself about the test this morning,” I said, stepping onto the elevator. “He didn’t even come in this morning for his regular rounds.”

“That is a little weird for him. He is very attentive to his patients, especially the ones that he likes their mom, too,” Mia joked.

“Knock it off. He just likes me because I’m your sister,” I said, wondering now if it was actually the truth. “I’m sure he has a good reason for not coming in.”

The elevator dinged the fifth floor. It was what Sophie called a scary floor. Every room we passed had a machine in it, but not many people.

“Parker said room five twelve.” Mia looked at the doors as we passed. “Here we are. Chloe, knock please.”

“Hello there, you must be Sophie. Dr. Hawthorne told me you would be here soon.” The technician held the door so we could enter. “This test is super easy.”

“Is it going to hurt?” Sophie grabbed my hand. “I don’t like shots.”

The door opened behind us and Parker walked in. “Hi, are we ready to take some more pictures of your valve?”

“Hi Uncle Parker. Are we taking more pictures of my HVV?” Sophie asked. “I mean, my HHV?”

“Yes, that’s it. Did you think of a name for it yet?” Parker lifted Sophie onto the bed next to the machine. “I call it HHV, but you still have to give your own special one a name.”

“I didn’t think of a name yet.” Sophie looked at the screen. “Look, Aunt Mia, that’s my HHV. I think I’ll call it Tinkerbell.”

“I think I like that name.” I squeezed Mia’s hand when she grabbed mine.

“Mummy, can you give me Benjamin so he can see Tinkerbell too?” Sophie asked. “Uncle Parker, when can I go to your house?”

“Well, your valve, Tinkerbell, looks very, very happy and your fever is all gone so I think pretty soon.” Parker lifted Sophie off the bed and back into the wheelchair. “You can ask Dr. Trey and see what he says.”

“Where is Dr. Trey?” I asked. “He didn’t come in for morning rounds.”

“He has been down in Neonatal all day. A set of triplets came too early,” Parker said, opening the door to leave. “If I know Trey, he’ll stay with them throughout the night.”

“Thanks Parker. I’ll be in Sophie’s room. Let me know when you’re done for the day.” Mia kissed Parker’s cheek. “Alright ladies, let’s go back to Sophie’s room and have a snack.”

“A healthy snack. Not so much McDonald’s,” Parker called out from down the hall.

“Boo,” Mia and I said at the same time.

Chapter 51

Trey

I’d wanted tobe there in person when Sophie found out she could leave the hospital, but I didn’t think it fair to make her wait all day when she could be somewhere more comfortable.

“Dr. Hawthorne, can I get you something to eat?” one of the nurses asked. “Or are you going to go home and get some rest?”

“Thanks Alice. Can you grab me a coffee?” I rubbed the back of my neck. “I’m going to be right here all night, so on your way back grab me a blanket and a pillow.”

“Betty called up and had us set up an empty room for you,” the nurse said. “She sure does take care of you.”

“We’ve worked together for a long time. Which room?” I asked. “I’ll be in there if you need me.”
