My cell phone buzzed in my pocket. “Brat, did you get caught by security?” I joked.

“Yes, I did. He doesn’t seem to know we own the place,” Murphy growled over the phone. “Please tell him to let me in.”

I spoke briefly with security, then went back to the triplets. I reached in to hold Baby 1’s hand and she responded.

“Mrs. Collins, I was thinking it’s time for that little one to rest for a few minutes,” I said with my back to her. “Don’t worry, you can hold her again after.”

“After what? Does she need something?” Mrs. Collins worried. “Should I try to feed her?”

“Not right now. What I would like is for you to hold onto this little guy.” I turned now so she could see her other baby. “Only for a few minutes, then back in the incubator.”

“Dr. Hawthorne, thank you so much.” She handed Baby 2 to Alice and reached for 1.

I walked over to Baby 3. He was struggling, but stable. I looked up when Alice pointed to the window. Murphy had arrived.

“That’s my sister. I need to speak with her,” I told Alice. “Have Mrs. Collins hold 1 for five minutes then have her spend the most time with Baby 3 without removing him.”

“Are you leaving sir?” Alice asked.

“No, I’ll be in the vacant room if you need me.” I walked over to Mrs. Collins. “You should give them names. It’s good for them to start hearing your voice and their names.”

“I have been afraid to name them.” Mrs. Collins blinked back tears. “We have names picked out already. This one is Maya. The other girl is Megan, and my son is Michael.”

“Those are lovely names. The boy is Michael?” I smiled and looked over to Murphy. “I kinda like calling him 3.”

Chapter 52

Chloe

“Ihave a great idea.” Mia burst into Sophie’s room upon returning from getting moo juice at the nurse station. “How about if we do some sightseeing from the car? We can drive through Times Square and through Central Park.”

“What is a square time?” Sophie drew her eyebrows in. “Mummy’s watch is round.”

“From the car?” I asked. “Are we playing pretend or are we busting out?”

“We can play pretend while we’re in the wheelchair on our way to the real car.” Mia did a little happy dance. “Come on, get dressed.”

“Mia, what’s going on? You have to go back to drinking tea instead of coffee,” I teased. “Sophie, look out this window at all the people down there. They look like ants.”

“Better yet, let’s look at the people from my limo while we eat a big fat hot pretzel.” Mia was putting stuff from the closet into my suitcase. “You’re not getting it, are you?”

“Yes, I get it, I think,” I said slowly. “You’re losing it from being here too long and ….”

“No, Nurse Betty just told me that Trey and Parker have released Sophie.” Mia grabbed me in a bear hug. “She’s doing so good we can get out of here and go to my place.”

Nurse Betty walked in at that moment with discharge information. “First, Dr. Trey said to give her a breathing treatment because he knows you won’t go straight home.”

“He’s not wrong about that,” Mia nodded. “Chloe, come on, get your stuff out of the bathroom.”

Leaving the hospital took a little longer than expected. Sophie wanted to share all her vases of flowers and balloons with the other sick kids. So, we had to stop by every room.

“It’s so weird to me to have a big limo waiting for you every time you step out of anywhere,” I said as the driver opened the door for us. “I could get used to it, but don’t you just want to drive yourself sometimes?”

“I have a car, Chloe. It’s just easier this way in the city.” Mia climbed into the limo with Sophie. “How about getting that pretzel I told you about?”

“I would love to get a pretzel from a vendor, and I would die for a hot tea.” I climbed into the car behind Sophie.

“I want ice cream,” Sophie announced. “Dr. Trey said I can have some before dark time so I don’t cough too much for bedtime.”
