“I’m having lunch in the park with Sophie.” Mia said. “If it can wait I can go tomorrow.”

“I have surgery tomorrow, plus a few appointments in the afternoon,” I replied. “Actually, this whole week is slammed. That’s why I was trying to knock it out today.”

“Why don’t you give Chloe a call? She’s sitting at the house doing nothing, which, in her words, is free time,” Mia urged. “Make her go with you. She has good taste.”

“I don’t wanna bother her if she’s having free time,” I said. “I can go myself.”

“Don’t be silly. I’m positive she’d love to get out of the penthouse,” Mia insisted. “Call her.”

“I’ll think about it. Go have fun with Sophie.” I hung up the phone.

I can’t ask Chloe to help me. Can I? Should I? Why not? We’re friends. I’ll text her instead of calling so she can say no without putting me on the spot.

“Hey there. My mother wants me to pick out wedding rings and I have free time today. I was wondering if you would or could help me?”I texted.

“I would and I could. I’m not doing anything. When?”

“I can be there in twenty minutes.”

“Oh, you mean like now, now.”

“Yeah, if that works for you.”

“Sure, I’ll be downstairs in twenty.”

What she didn’t know was that I was ready right now, but I wanted to give her some time. I paced around my penthouse and checked my watch every five minutes until I finally headed down to my limo.

“Hey, wow, you’re punctual, but I guess you have to be as a doctor,” Chloe said, getting into the limo.

“Thanks for helping me out with this. How have you been?” I asked, feeling nervous.

“We’ve been having a great time hanging out with Mia. I’m sorry we have to leave soon,” Chloe frowned. “Let’s not talk about that. Tell me, what kind of ring are you looking for?”

“A diamond and a plain band for me,” I shrugged. “Other than that, no idea.”

We stopped at the first jewelry store and spent about thirty minutes looking at the different solitaire shapes and sizes. I was unsure, so we left and headed to the next store.

“How about if you show me some rings you would like, as a girl,” I suggested.

“Hey, you two. Mia told me you were out ring shopping,” Mom said from behind us in the store. “I was across the street, so I thought I’d come over and give my opinion.”

“Mom, it’s great to see you.” I kissed her cheek. “Chloe was just going to show me what she likes, from a girl’s perspective.”

“Yes, I understood what you were saying, Trey.” Mom smiled. “Chloe, which ones were you going to show him?”

“The pear shape with the pale blue diamonds along the outer edge is beautiful,” Chloe sighed. “It’s romantic and delicate, even with the enormous carat size.”

“You’re sure about which ring that fast?” I asked in surprise. “This is only our second store.”

“Sorry, but you don’t need a bunch of stores if the one you want is in front of you.” Chloe stared at the ring when the clerk handed it to her.

“I like the way you think,” I said to Chloe.

“Put it on. There’s no harm in that,” Mom said. “How many times does a girl get to try on wedding rings, after all?”

“Oh, it’s beautiful, and the one I’d pick, but this isn’t for me.” Chloe handed the ring back to the clerk. “Since you have no idea what your new bride will like, I think you should go with a basic solitaire.”

“That makes sense, I suppose,” I nodded. “Mom, would you agree?”
