“No drama, Chloe, her and I had a slumber party.” Mia pushed me back in bed. “Parker was so funny last night when I went in my room to leave him a note that’d I’d be in bed with Sophie.”

“Parker was funny?” I pulled the covers over my shoulder. “What happened?”

“He said I might want to see if I’ll fit first,” Mia laughed. “I was so confused. Then he said ‘two’s company, three’s a crowd.’”

“What was that supposed to mean?” I asked. “Was he awake?”

“I’m not sure. He just stretched and pulled the covers up and went back to sleep.” Mia put the digital thermometer to my head. “At the time, I thought he was referring to her stuffed animals. It became clearer when I went to get in bed with her.”

“And was it the stuffed animals?” I asked, now wondering.

“No, I tiptoed in and clicked on the lamp…” Mia stopped talking.

“Oh really?” I yawned and felt myself falling back asleep.

* * *

I must have fallen back asleepbecause hours later I opened my eyes to bright sunlight piercing my eyeballs. I moaned and buried my head under my pillows.

“’Girls’ night’, she said. ‘Mojitos,’ she said. Only fun for a few hours,” I groaned under my pillow. “What was I thinking? I can’t drink that much.”

Crickey.I squinted my eyes open again. I wasn’t in my bed. I was in a bed in a room with the shades up, sunlight streaming in. I slowly sat up, looking around, realization moving through the fog in my head.

“Hey you. How are you feeling?” Mia asked, walking in to sit on the bed next to me.

“What am I doing in the other guest bedroom? Oh my God, did I get sick in bed with Sophie?” I asked, throwing myself back onto the pillows.

“No, you had a fever last night, so I put you in here, away from Sophie,” Mia said. “You don’t remember any of that happening? I didn’t realize you had that much to drink. We had this same conversation about four hours ago.”

“My head is killing me, and I’m dizzy. Really, we did?” I sighed miserably. “I must have had too much to drink. No, I didn’t. I only had two drinks.”

Mia reached over and placed her hand on my forehead. “You’re burning up, you wanker. Stay in bed. I’ll get you some more medicine and the thermometer.”

“Did Sophie get scared in bed by herself?” I asked. “Is she okay? She hasn’t been alone since this heart thing started.”

“Stay in bed, I’ll show you how she is. You’re not going to believe this.” Mia laughed, then leaned back on the bed with her cell phone out.

There on the cell screen was Victoria and Sophie, and they were still in bed in their pajamas.

“They requested brekkie in bed,” Mia laughed. “Here, watch the screen. I’ll be back in a minute.”

Mia laid the cell next to me then walked away. I sat up and held it, the camera showing me Amoeba at the foot of the bed with them, curled in a ball. In between Victoria and Sophie were bunny, teddy, and seal. As I watched, Mia came into view and they all waved.

“Aunt Mia, give Mummy a kiss for me,” Sophie yelled as Mia turned to go out of the room.

“You tell her. She‘s looking at the camera right now,” Mia pointed.

“Mummy, I love you a million teddy bears.” Sophie bounced on the bed holding her teddy, Benjamin.

“I love you a million bounces, baby,” I whispered to the empty room.

I buried myself under the mound of pillows, determined to stay there forever. I heard the door open, then felt Mia climb onto the bed and move the comforter.

“Come out from under there and take these Tylenol.”

“Ugh, don’t move the covers unless you close the shades. I think I’m gonna be a vampire now,” I griped. “I never want anything to drink again.”

“Fine. Here, look at the video I just made.” Mia shoved her cell under the covers in the general direction of the largest lump. “You’re being such a big baby though. I’ll be back in a little while.”
