“She seems like a lot.” Chloe laid her head against my chest.

“A lot of what?” I asked.

“Just a lot,” Chloe said in a low voice.

“Hey, Trey, here she comes. Sorry, she snuck up on me.” Mia shrugged. “I think she changed her outfit.”

“Well, how nice I find you over here with the “family” again.” Natalie growled. “It’s time to go to the next stop. My driver is waiting out front.”

“Didn’t you come with your driver?” Mia asked, eyeing me suspiciously.

“She said she had something planned and her driver would take over for the rest of the night.” I released Chloe. “I figured, why not, my driver could use a night off.”

“Well, you should probably get going on the rest of your evening,” Chloe said. “Like Mia said, she does own you for, like, another hour-and-a-half.”

“Goodnight girls.” I walked away, reluctantly, with Natalie.

We hadn’t made it out of the club yet because, in true Natalie form, she had changed her outfit so the tabloids would look like we had more than one date. I knew her tricks. I looked across the club to where Mia and Chloe had returned to their table. The cameras clicked until Natalie spotted an actress friend in the VIP section.

“Trey, I’m going to go say hello. Do you mind terribly?” Natalie asked sweetly for the camera to catch. “I’ll be right back, darling.”

I took that freedom to go back to Chloe and Mia.

“Why does Chloe have her head on the table?” I looked to Mia for an answer.

“Because she isn’t feeling well. I just messaged my driver.” Mia pushed a fresh bottle of water at me. “This just came but I only order two. Drink it, you look like you need it.”

I scooped up the water and downed it. I took a seat at the table next to Chloe.

“Looks like there’s only two cameras still here, and they’re pointed at those two movie stars in the VIP area,” I said, reaching for something to say.

“Why are you still here, Trey, or better yet, why are you over here instead of over there with the limelight?” Mia asked.

When I remained silent, Chloe peered up and looked straight at me.

“Don’t quit on her now, Trey. You’re almost at the finish line.” Chloe’s tone seemed deliberately light and nonchalant.

I turned my head, as if about to say something, and then changed my mind. “You’re right.” I cleared my throat, turning to where Auction Girl was standing and chatting up a few other socialites.

“I’m off to face the dragon, ladies. I’ll hopefully see you on the other side,” I said with an eyebrow wiggle. Then I walked away and right into Auction Girl’s embrace and kiss.

Chapter 68

Chloe

We danced most of the night until I started feeling sick. Trey had snuck over and joined us a few times before the dragon slayer took him away. It drove me crazy, thinking about what they were doing after they left the club, but Mia’s driver picked us up shortly after he walked away.

I hit the remote to page Sandra for a juice, then burrowed back under the covers.

Why can’t I remember leaving the club. I didn’t get drunk. Wait, was Trey in our limo? Why was Trey in my room? Was that a dream?

“Good morning, sunshine,” Mia said, sitting on the side of my bed. “How are you feeling?”

“I feel like I had too much to drink, combined with my face feeling like a heating pad,” I moaned. “Did you and Trey put me in the limo last night?”

“Yes ma’am, we did, and we put you in this bed so you wouldn’t get Sophie sick.” Mia handed me Advil and a glass of juice. “Sandra told me you asked for the juice.”

“Okay, that explains a few things. Oh my God, where’s Sophie?” I threw the covers back. “I’m a terrible mom.”
