“I don’t think it would matter. If it did, Sawyer wouldn’t be too happy. He’s pretty chill.” Asher stumbled toward the patio. “Do you need a proper escort, or you know your way?”

“I know my way. Good night, Asher.” I pointed the light on my cell in front of me.

Cookies. I need cookies.

I tiptoed back down the stairway and back through the dining room and stuck my head in the kitchen. No one was in there. I walked in and nearly jumped out of my skin when the lights came on. I spun around, looking to see who had turned them on, but there wasn’t anyone there. Within a few seconds, the lights faded. I took a step and the lights went brighter.

Okay, they’re motion sensor lights. That’s kinda neat. You don’t have to remember to turn them off.

Since I hadn’t been caught, I walked around trying every door, looking for a pantry where they might hide cookies. There were none to be found. I did find a wall with four ovens, and that’s when the crazy idea took me over.

I could make a couple batches of cookies. Might be a nice snack and give Marcus a break. Yeah, that’s it. It’ll help Marcus.

I went to work getting baking supplies and bowls. The blender was the hardest thing to find, but I eventually found it. All I needed now was a big bowl.

“Can I help you find something?” a male voice asked.

I spun around, caught red-handed. “Umm, hi. I was looking for cookies and I didn’t see any so I thought maybe I could make some.”

He said nothing and I stood looking at him. I sat the bowl on the counter next to the flour. “When I can’t sleep, I bake, and I thought I could make some extra for everybody, and Charlie will be here tomorrow, and he will want more,” I rambled on, frozen in place.

“Jade, I had a feeling it was going to be you when I was alerted to someone in the kitchen.” Marcus tied his robe belt. “Charlie told me that you would need to use my kitchen to make cookies for him and that I should get your recipe.”

“I’m so sorry. He shouldn’t have said that to you. There’s nothing special about my cookies.” I shifted on my feet.

“On the contrary. He shared the cookies with me and they were quite delicious.” Marcus walked all the way over to me.

“I got everything out, but I can put it away.” I chewed my lip, waiting for him to be mad.

“Would you like to make some right now? Together?”

Chapter 84

Sawyer

Ididn’t know what had woken me up. I looked over to the other chair to see that Asher had gone to bed and left me out there to be eaten by sea creatures. My stomach growled, but I knew the crew would be asleep. I checked my watch. It was two in the morning.

Cookies. Time to get my hidden stash.

I made my way to the kitchen. I could hear voices and pushed through the door. The lights were on at one hundred percent and the bright glare made me cover my whole face with my arm.

“Marcus, is that you? I fell asleep on the beach again,” I mumbled, making my way to the pantry. “I’m hungry. Do we have anything good?”

“How about some hot chocolate chip cookies?” Marcus and Jade laughed.

“Hold on.” I went to the light switch and pushed it down to dim the bright light. “Did you say cookies?

“Yes, we saidhow about hot cookies,” Jade answered.

“What are you doing in here? Marcus doesn’t let anyone in his kitchen.” I looked to them now that my eyes had begun to adjust to the lights.

“I do now, especially when someone is teaching me how to make the perfect chocolate chip cookie,” Marcus said. “But don’t get any ideas about doing this yourself, Sawyer.”

“It’s my house, though,” I mumbled. “I want cookies.”

“Yes, it’s your house, but it’s my kitchen and the last time you and Asher used this kitchen you almost burned it down.” Marcus argued.

“It smells so good. Is there more than one kind of cookie?” I asked, getting closer. “You’re gonna wake up the whole house with the smell of these cookies.”
