“Tell Mrs. Willow to make me one of those pineapple cakes for dessert.” Dad smiled wide. “She makes the best ones. Tommy, you want anything from the bakery?”

“No sir, I have patients to go check up on. I’ll be back this afternoon to see how therapy went.” Tommy walked to the door and nodded for me to follow him out. “We can discuss which facility we should move you to as well.”

“Dad, I’m going to run over and get those donuts. Be right back.” I kissed his forehead and followed Tommy into the hall. “I know what you’re going to say.”

“Then you know I’m going to tell you we need to get him to the right rehab facility and pronto.” Tommy crossed his arms. “I’m not so sure the ones I gave you the pamphlets for will be able to handle everything going on with him.”

“I can’t even afford those places.” I frowned and leaned against the wall. “What about an actual military facility?”

“Jade, they’re not as good. They can handle the PTSD, but a lot of men like your dad go without proper attention.” Tommy looked at his vibrating cell. “I have an emergency to get to. Relax, I’ll look into some more places and we can talk tonight.”

Tommy hurried down the hall. I took a quick peek into my dad’s room. He was back asleep. I slowly backed out of the room.

“Ladies, I’m going to the bakery for Dad. Can I bring you anything for putting up with the Admiral?” I looked to each nurse’s tired face. “Come on, don’t make me guess the wrong thing, now.”

They each gave me their order and I happily walked the short distance down the street to the bakery. I could see the marina from the bakery and the yacht was still docked there.

Why is the yacht there? Did something happen last night?

I put in my order at the bakery then jogged over to the marina and out onto the dock.

“Hello. Anyone up there?” I yelled up.

“Miss Campbell, good morning.” Marcus greeted me from the deck of the yacht. “We’ll be shoving off in a few minutes.”

“Alright, is everything okay? I wasn’t aware you’d be docking overnight.” I blocked my eyes from the sun, looking up.

“Hey there, cutie,” Asher said from behind me. “I was just up at the office looking for you.”

“Asher, what were you looking for me for?” I turned to face him. “Oh, it’s both of you. Did you have a problem?”

“Not now that you’re here,” Asher grinned behind mirrored sunglasses. “I just wanted to thank you for not having us towed for parking without permission.”

“Go away, Ash. Miss Hawthorne, we were just about to leave. I’ll have Josh call the marina shortly to pay for the overnight,” Sawyer said. “We had to stay because it was too dark to shove off with this big thing.”

“And?” I asked, a little suspicious.

“And too many of them were hammered.” He shrugged. “I gave them the night off.”

“You don’t owe me any money for docking and staying. I’m aware the power is off, and it would have been too dark.” I looked around the dock. “Thank you, though.”

“A stay is a stay.” Sawyer walked over to the plank to his yacht. “Thanks for the recommendation with George, by the way.”

“You’re welcome. Am I bringing the band over tonight?” I called out to him.

“Yes, same time as usual,” he called back. Then, they untied and shoved off.

Why do I let him irritate me? He’s nice one minute, then the next he drives me crazy.

Chapter 44

Sawyer

Iwatched her from the deck as we backed away. She looked tired.

Everyone says she’s so nice. So why am I always antagonistic toward her?

“What’s going on in that head of yours?” Asher handed me a coffee. “Blondie making you rethink this bride thing?”
