“We have a driver. I’ll call him right now.” Lex searched her chair for her cell. “Wait, where is your driver?”

“I sent him back to the hotel hours ago. I didn’t want to leave him sitting in the car all night,” I grinned. “I guess I assumed I could just sleep in this chair if this took a lot of the night.”

“Don’t be ridiculous, of course you could sleep here, and not in a chair.” Lex stumbled over and hugged me from behind. “Let’s all go to the mall and see what they caught.”

“I’m in.” Spencer stood and stretched. “Look, the lights are back on.”

I turned back to see the mall lit up once again. I could see Gunner and the boys walking. I dialed his number again.

“Asher, sorry I couldn’t answer, I was a little tied up with a situation here.” He waved to the camera.

“What exactly was the situation?” I demanded.

“It was just some kids,” Gunner said. “We let them go.”

“Kids?” I growled. “Kids? You’re telling me kids have been running around my mall at night?”

“Yes sir, they’ve been hiding out in the men’s room until everyone leaves,” Gunner said. “They didn’t have records, so I didn’t wanna turn them in, and Charlie scared the heck out of them. They won’t be back.”

“Kids? What about the elf legs,” I asked, “or the trees decorated overnight?”

“Believe it or not, they had on elf-looking socks.” Gunner looked into the camera and shrugged. “I don’t know why they decorated the trees. Maybe the were bored once they got locked in.”

“No way!” Kids did not decorate those trees,” I barked back. “Show me a picture of their socks. I’m not believing that, either.”

“Did you hire me to handle this?” Gunner crossed his arms, looking into the camera. “Because if you did, and I’m telling you it’s handled, then it’s handled.”

“I can appreciate that. You four are ridiculous in your abilities, but I’m not drinking anymore and I can tell something is not right,” I said. “I’ll be back in the morning. I wanna see the footage of these kids.”

“As you wish.” Gunner turned away, gesturing to the guys as he hung up.

“Now I’ve gone and pissed off a really cool guy who could also snap me in half with one arm.” I plopped down in a recliner. “Lex, you were there. You saw the film. Do you believe it could be kids with elf socks on?”

I waited for her reply. None came, so I looked back to find them both sound asleep with Spencer snoring. I couldn’t blame them. This whole thing was very anticlimactic. I wasn’t believing this story, but Gunner had literally no reason to lie to me. I was disappointed it wasn’t an elf.

I was hoping for a magical elf.

I kicked back in the recliner, feeling deflated. I grabbed my cell from my pocket and messaged Apple.

“Are you awake? Probably not, but I needed to talk to someone.”

“I’m awake. What’s wrong? I mean, I’m just a phone, but I have Google to solve any issues.”

“Why are you awake?”

“Just finished an exciting adventure. Now I’m wide awake.”

“Really, what kind of an adventure? Surfing the web?”

“Yes. Bikini and all.”

“How did you manage a bikini and keep all your circuits covered?”

“I’ll never tell. What could be so bad in the middle of the night?”

“Nothing important, just feeling frustrated. You had on a bikini?”

“One-track mind, I see.”
