“Can I get all of the Hawthornes up here please?’ Aunt Victoria said into the microphone. “That includes the western Hawthornes that have attended this evening.”

Western Hawthorne, who is she talking about?

Finian tried his best to not show up with the rest of the family. He never did like being in the spotlight and he always had that camera around his neck. We all climbed up on stage to say goodnight with a final Halloween dance. It was then that I saw my cousin Jace.

“Cota, how are you? It’s been far too long.” Jace grabbed me in a big hug. “You haven’t been out to ride in years.”

“I’ve been away at college, getting that degree that we all know my father demands.”

“Ah, yes, the much-needed degree in a family full of businesses.” He stepped back. “However, since you have that degree, I’d like to talk to you about a little business venture.”

“Why don’t you come to my place tonight? You can bunk with Finian.”

“Ha, I haven’t had to do that in forever.” Jace rolled his eyes. “Parker already asked me to stay at his place, but aren’t you in the same building?”

“One floor down. Why don’t you come by and join me and Finian for oreos and milk later?”

“Now, you know I won’t ever turn down oreos.”

Aunt Victoria was saying goodnight and we all took a bow as we did every year. Sabrina had been smiling the whole evening and when we sat with my aunt and uncle eating, she was beaming with excitement and it hit me how much I liked this girl and wanted to see her every day.

If someone told me a year ago I’d be feeling this way…

ChapterSixty-Seven

SABRINA

Iam falling in love with him, but how do I tell him? What if he doesn’t feel the same way?

His brother Finian had come to stay with us and, shortly after arriving at the penthouse, Jace showed up with a spoon in his hand.

“Isn’t that the picture of a sad rich boy? But shouldn’t that be a silver spoon?” Cota pointed to the fancy gold spoon in his hand.

“Apparently, Mia likes gold.” He came all the way into the kitchen holding his spoon out. “I see you’re having cookies, but do you have ice cream?”

“Always have both, come on in.” Cota took bowls out.

“So, you remember never getting a spoon back in the day?” Finian took a seat at the island.

“Um, I remember you guys hiding the spoons or purposely not getting enough when we would sneak ice cream out of the kitchen.” Jace demanded. “I wasn’t about to let that happen this time. I’ve gotten too old to eat from the container with my mouth.”

“Sabrina, come sit with us. Can I tempt you with a bowl of ice cream?”

“You know how you have ruined my good habits and I can’t live without it now.” I held out my empty bowl and Cota filled it.

“I want to hear the story of how you two came to be,” Finian dropped down onto the couch, “and how long this will last.”

I don’t think I want to hear his answer to that. Say goodnight, get out of the room.

“Well, Murphy was trying to get me to join her in the theatre task and I went to meet her one night. Sabrina’s boss was a complete maniac and Murphy wanted to save her from him.” Cota finished his ice cream and put his arm across my shoulders. “Aunt Victoria knew I was trying to convince my father to let me take over one of the family businesses but wouldn’t because he doesn’t think I’m mature enough.”

“Ah, okay so she told you to marry her for maturity and she needed marrying to get a green card to stay here away from her troupe and boss,” Finian said. “Very commendable, little brother.”

“How do you like being with my cousin?” Jace asked. “Is he behaving himself?”

“He has been very kind to me.” I answered as briefly as possible.

“When are you going to get married?” Jace asked Finian.
