“How do you know it’s her?” I looked up to the plane.

“Ah, because I recognize the Hawthorne logo on the side of the plane.” I pointed to it.

“Does everyone in your family have a plane?”

“Most of them do, or they share a plane. It really depends on if they have to travel a lot.”

“You do not have one of your own, though, correct?” I asked. “That was Sawyer’s plane, was it not?”

“Correct, but now that I graduated and hope to start in the family business somewhere, I’ll be getting my own plane.” Cota stopped walking. “Ya know, now that you’re my wife, you and I can pick one out together.”

“I appreciate that you are so generous, but we both know this marriage is not real and for only a year.” I turned away from him to walk again. “You should pick the one you like.”

“I’m not looking at it that way and I hope you’ll change your thoughts on it too,” he answered quickly. “Let’s just have fun for now.”

We walked along silently for a few minutes. I didn’t know how to respond to his comments about our marriage. I knew one thing, though, and that was I needed to not get too attached to him or his family.

How do I not get attached to this wonderful family?

ChapterThirty

COTA

We walked along without speaking. I was surprised at how comfortable I was with Sabrina, already. She was easy to be with, way easier than the socialite girls. She didn’t want anything from me or my family. We could end up being great friends when this is all over with.

A year married to her won’t be so bad. Murphy will be texting any minute now.

As I thought, my cell text chime went off. Murphy had landed and was looking for a ride to the marina. I messaged back that she would have to walk the few blocks, then waited for her outrage.

“I am NOT walking. I have stilettos on.”She demanded.

“You wore stilettos to come to an island?”

“No, I was working and still wearing the same clothes.”

“So take them off. You’re in the tropics.”

“Just send a driver.”

“No can do. There are no drivers here.”

I knew Jade’s father had already offered to pick her up. Jade had sent me a text about it. I was just having a little fun toying with her. Her comment “it’s just money” had been bouncing around in my head for days. With Murphy, it’s lots of money, money, money.

“Jade’s dad should be there any minute and we are all here at the marina waiting on you.”

“And you couldn’t tell me that before? You just lied about walking?”

“I wasn’t lying. It’s only a few blocks. You just might have liked it.”

“I don’t think so.”

“Isn’t that what you go to the gym every day for?”

“No, I go to stay in shape, so I don’t have to walk a few blocks in heels.”

“Stop being such a baby.”

“I’ll see you at the marina where I’ll be tossing you overboard.”
