“Frat parties don’t count,” August chirped. “This is a sophisticated party.”
“It wasn’t a frat party. It was actually a party an associate held for his employees. I was there for a meeting and he invited me to stay.” Asher laughed, “At first I thought it sounded lame, cuz it’s a kid game but, once it got going, it was fun.”
“Alright, I like it. Any other ideas?” Aunt Victoria looked around. “Shall we take a vote on musical chairs?”
Everyone nodded, then hands were raised to agree with the game to play at the party. We all agreed it would be amusing in costumes. I suggested we have a second round and invite party quests to play.
“I am confused. Is your family going to play a children’s game at a big party?” Sabrina whispered to me. “Can that be true?”
“Yeah, it’s a thing Aunt Victoria has been doing as far back as I can remember. She thinks it makes all the guests more relaxed to see the Hawthorne family acting silly and having fun,” I shrugged. “I think she’s right. Plus, it’s a lot of fun. You’ll like it.”
“Me? Why do you say that?”
“Because you’re a Hawthorne now so you will be expected to play as well.”
ChapterSixty-One
SABRINA
He wants me to play a children’s game.
“Sabrina, don’t be worried. We’ll all be there and it’s fun.”
“It will be the first-time people know I am married to you. What will they think of me in a silly costume playing games?”
“They’ll think you’re as fun as the rest of us.” He smiled. “I won’t even tell them how we found you under furniture all day.”
“Oh, I hope not.”
“Sabrina, Murphy and I would like to have a word with you before you leave today,” Aunt Victoria said on her way out of the room.
“Okay, I can come now.” I stood, feeling a nervous tingle go down my spine.
I followed them to Victoria’s office. I knew I wasn’t in any danger like with Yury, but I was scared that I would have to go back or something. Murphy was all smiles and being a chatterbox about her costume and decorations for something.
“Sabrina, you look so nervous, dear.” She gestured to a chair across from her. “We wanted to see if you will perform at the Halloween Monster Mash.” Victoria picked up her cell phone. “We like this song for the performance. Do you think you can come up with a dance for it?”
We listened to the music she was suggesting. I closed my eyes, imagining what it could look like and how it would end. The only thing I had on my mind, other than the dance, was how I would do it alone if I did not find a partner.
“Do you have questions?” Victoria asked. “I can see you thinking over there.”
“I am concerned about Yury and the rest of them finding me. The second thing I am thinking about is if you have someone to dance with me?”
“Of course, we would have a male part for the show. Murphy already checked with a few dance schools and we’re going to let you audition them.”
“You want me to pick?”
“Honestly, you are the only one who can choose,” Victoria leaned back in her chair, “and, as far as Yury, don’t even worry. Bond has got you covered.”
“Are you excited to perform again?” Murphy plopped down in a chair next to me. “I have so many ideas for your costume.”
I sat there going through so many emotions all at once. I could hear them speaking about the performance and outfits, but my mind was racing to the point where I felt nervous sweat beading on my back. It’s been nearly two months since I truly danced and I wasn’t completely sure I could still do it.
“I know what’s happening in that pretty head of yours, Sabrina.” Murphy grabbed my hand, startling me. “Stop worrying. You’re safe and you are an amazing dancer. I wish I had a quarter of your ability.”
“Thank you, Murphy. You were the one to notice how I was being treated and you both saved me.” I squeezed her hand. “I will begin practicing tomorrow. Will I be able to get into the theatre?”
“I’ve already arranged with Bond to bring you and stay with you. I’ll have the male part auditions for Wednesday to give you two days to warm yourself up.” Victoria stood from her desk. “I’m sure your husband is waiting on you.”
