I hugged them both then went to find Cota. The more I thought about performing again the more excited I was. Now I would have to make sure I practiced so I did not embarrass myself.

“Look at you.” I kneeled down next to Lionel. “What are you doing by the front door, sir?”

“He wants to go play outside.” Poppy appeared behind me. “He’s been upset with me ever since we moved to the city. He likes to run around in the trees.”

“Do you go out with him?” I worried for him. “I mean, will he run away?”

“Never. He knows he has it great, but he still likes to play.” Poppy scooped him up and kissed his face. “I told him we could go out when Vicky went down for a nap. As you can see, he did not forget.”

“Does Lionel have any siblings or babies?” I stroked his back in Poppy’s arms. “I’d love to have one myself.”

“No, he doesn’t, but I am always happy to have him go stay with Aunt Sabrina for a visit.” Poppy opened the front door. “Who knows, maybe I will breed him, but I fear his children may not be as domesticated as him.”

“Bye, Lionel, and thanks Poppy for being so kind.”

“See you at the Halloween Mash.” She stepped outside and placed Lionel on the ground.

“Sabrina, you ready to go?” Cota called out from the parking area.

I watched Lionel scurry up a nearby tree, making his little ferret noises. We climbed into the back of the car with Bond as our driver. I hadn’t realized I had been so very quiet until Cota asked me if everything was okay.

“Huh? Oh, sorry. No, nothing is wrong. I was thinking about performing for the Halloween Mash.” I turned in my seat to look at him. “Did I tell you about it?”

“No, but Aunt Victoria mentioned it to me before she went to you.” He took a bottle of water from the mini-fridge. “She just wanted to see if I thought you would like to do it.”

“Thank you for saying it is okay to do the performance.”

“You don’t need my permission, Sabrina.”

It was mid-afternoon when we arrived back in the city. Cota had some business stuff to do and I asked Bond to bring me to the theatre to get an early jump on practicing. We agreed to meet back at the newly-decorated penthouse for dinner. Practice had been a bit trying after not dancing for two months, but it felt incredible. I made it into the penthouse before Cota.

Wow! I had no idea my requests would look like this. Wow.

Bond said goodnight, leaving me alone in this place that was my new home. I wandered from room to room, looking at and touching everything, touching things I was never allowed to touch when I lived on the compound. I found what had to be my room because of my color scheme. Not only was my room done, but all my belongings from Kellan’s place were already there.

I could use a hot shower. I should have time before Cota gets here. His text said an hour.

The hot shower was amazing on my already sore muscles. I put on a fuzzy robe and slippers, poured myself a glass of iced tea, and settled in on a lounger on the balcony looking out at the city lights. My last thought was that I was getting hungry, when I awoke to the smell of garlic and cheese.

“Pizza. Please tell me it is pizza,” I sighed without opening my eyes. “If it’s not pizza then you must go away at once.”

“Good thing it’s pizza, and don’t forget the garlic knots.”

“I can enjoy this for tonight, then I must eat healthy again. I have to perform and fit in a tight costume.”

“You don’t have an ounce of fat on you. Here, take a big bite.” He held a slice in front of me. “I’m sorry you had to come back here alone.”

“I am accustomed to being alone and I will be alone again when this marriage ends, but for now I forgive you since you brought pizza.” I grabbed the whole slice from him. “You can leave the box right here next to me, please.”

“Are you eating your feeling tonight?”

“How does one eat their feelings?”

“It’s a saying.” He chuckled. “Never mind, it was a bad joke anyway. Let me grab a drink and I’ll join you.”

“You better hurry, I am starving,” I called out to him. “I cannot promise to save you some.”

We spent the rest of the evening talking and laughing. When it was time to go to bed, I crawled under the fancy covers and cried myself to sleep thinking about having to leave this man and his family.
