Page 8 of Rescuing Melissa

“This place isn’t safe. Up you get and out you go.” To move things along, I go to her dresser and tug out a few items of clothing, making myself a little pile so I’m not taking her with nothing. Of course, this cheap stuff is well beneath what she should have in her dresser. The fabrics are all old and faded without a designer name in sight.

Melissa stands, revealing bare legs long enough to bring a man to his knees. She is clad in a pink tank top and those short shorts that you really can’t tell if they’re outerwear or underwear. “I can’t leave my home.” But even as she argues, she searches for a pair of jeans in her drawer and slides them over those perfect legs, then slips a hoodie over her head.

My mouth waters when I think about tearing those things off her. I need to know how she tastes, how wet she gets at the sight of me between her knees.

Not now, I grumble to my filthy imagination as I corral her toward the exit.

“I can’t go with you!” she protests, finally digging her heels in when I hand her the pair of crappy tennis shoes sitting by the front door.

I wrap my arm around her waist and tug her to me, pinning her hips to mine so I can whisper a warning in her ear. “Lance knows you’re here. I’m getting you somewhere safe. If there’s anything you want to keep, grab it now. You’re not coming back here.”

Her intake of breath bespeaks an innocence I do not have. She looks a mixture of frightened and genuinely hurt that once again, she is not safe from him. “How? I tried so hard to be off the radar.”

I don’t mean to brush my hand over her round backside, but I can’t help myself. I spin her around and give her ass a light smack to send her packing. “You’ve got half a minute, doll.”

That spooks her into action.

I’m a man of my word because in thirty seconds, I have her out the door. Twenty more, and she’s safely in my car, tucked into my side in the backseat while Benny takes the wheel and Paul gives us some privacy by sitting up front.

I don’t ask them if they did their jobs because if I had to ask, they wouldn’t be with me tonight.

I don’t care that it’s terror that has Melissa clinging to my collar, her body pressed to my side while she buries her face in the crook of my neck. However she clings to me, I’ll take it. My arm coils around her hips, securing her to my side while Benny drives us to safety.

Melissa packed two bags, both of which sling over my shoulder when I tell Benny to pull off to the side of the road.

Benny turns his chin over his shoulder to frown at me. “You want me to drop you here? Why? I can take her to a hotel. There are half a dozen just up the road.”

I nod. “Exactly. If Lance has tabs on this car, I don’t want him knowing which one she’s staying at. We’ll walk the rest of the way. Tell my brothers what we found, but no phones. Tell them face to face. The first thing Lance is going to do is tap our phones. Antonio needs to change all the passwords Lance has access to. Shut him out of the loop as soon as you get to the mansion. Then we’ll deal with him before he can do any further damage to the organization.”

Benny nods, but I can tell he doesn’t like the prospect of leaving me unguarded. Still, he does as instructed while Paul nods to me, letting me know that I don’t need to worry about them doing their job.

I don’t worry about that. If I needed to, Paul and Benny would be six feet under by now.

After the sedan drives away, I turn to Melissa. She has been silent the entire way, but now that it’s just us, her questions come burbling out like a water fountain. “Lance paid Greg for footage of me? He has footage of me in my bedroom?”

I nod as I flip her hood over her head, tucking her dark curls inside to obscure her identity as best I can. I nod toward the city lights and start us on our path. “He had a camera in your bedroom, the kitchen, the living room and the bathroom.”

She whimpers, closing her eyes while she walks beside me. It’s chilly out tonight, and she’s a thin thing. “In the bathroom? Lance has been watching me in the bathroom?”

I keep her two bags slung over my shoulder and wrap my free arm around her torso, pulling her to my side so we walk in-step toward the bright lights of the main strip in the city proper. “If it helps, the camera was aimed at the shower.”

She shudders. “That doesn’t help.”

I grimace. “Yeah, I can’t imagine it would. Sorry.” I kiss her temple because she doesn’t seem to mind having me in her space. “You’re not going back there, Melissa. I’ll get you somewhere safe so I can deal with Lance.”

Her chin tilts downward. “You don’t even know me. Why are you helping me?”

Good question.

I’m sure she wants the more altruistic answer, rather than the one that turns possessive. She probably doesn’t want to know that I’m itching to put out Lance’s eyes for looking at her in ways he shouldn’t.

He’ll know she’s mine before the end.

Though, I should probably go about making her mine before I claim her to Lance.

I clear my throat. “Lance works for my family. My father had a hard and fast rule for us: no girlfriends.”
