“Here you go,” said Kate putting a tray of food down on the table. “You know I never eat crap like this except when I’m with you.”

“It’s ’cause I’m common. You can be your common self when you’re with me, rather than trying to fit in with your upper-crust mates.”

“I don’t think you’re common!”

“OK, working class then, is that more PC? I’m just saying that we get each other, we’re on the same page. I think you forget that sometimes.”

“Sorry,” said Kate, wondering why she’d overlooked Flo for so long.

“It’s fine,” said Flo, a piece of egg sticking to her chin. “Just don’t go forgetting me again when Maddie comes begging for forgiveness.”

“My God, you’re a witch,” said Kate, frozen to the spot.

“A witch? That’s a bit rude.”

“I didn’t mean it, but it’s like you conjured her up or something. Shit, hide me!”

Flo turned around and saw Maddie standing in the entrance, scanning the restaurant. Her eyes settled on Kate. “Sorry, mate, too late, she’s clocked you.”

“I can’t talk to her. We have to get out of here.”

“Remember how you felt last night? Hold on to that anger. She has no right to drive you out of anywhere.”

“Um…hi, Kate, hi, Flo.”

Flo ignored Maddie, picking a piece of cheese from her muffin and moulding it between her fingers.

“Kate, can we talk?”

“No.”

“Please, Kate. Just hear me out, then I’ll leave you alone. Five minutes is all I ask.”

Kate looked at Flo, who shrugged and said, “Five minutes to get that bitch out of your life seems like a price worth paying.”

Maddie winced, but said nothing.

“Fine. Five minutes.”

“Flo, do you mind if we talk in private?”

Flo laughed. “I’d hardly call this place private. If you meanwithout me here, you should have the balls to say it.”

“OK, if you wouldn’t mind Flo, I’d like to talk to Kate alone.Without you here.”

“I’m late for work anyway,” said Flo, shoving the last of her muffin in her mouth and walking round the table to give Kate a hug. “Call me any time,” she said, then turned and walked away.

Maddie flopped down in Flo’s seat and put her head in her hands. “I don’t know where to start,” she said quietly.

“Well, you’d better think quick because those five minutes are counting down.”

“There’s no need to be like that.”

“I’d say there’s every reason to be like that,” said Kate, noticing Maddie’s blush with pleasure.

“Look, I need you to know it only happened once.”

“When?”
