“The basics at first. I didn’t have a single GCSE to my name when I left school.”

“And now?”

“Passed them all last year.” Flo’s brazen grin had been replaced by a shy smile. Kate took her hand and squeezed it.

“Flo, you did all that on top of the crazy shifts you work? That’s seriously impressive.”

“It’s only GCSEs.”

“It’s notonlyanything. It’s brilliant, that’s what it is.”

“Thanks. Well anyway, my tutor said I should look into this college. I’ve been putting it off till I’ve saved a bit more cash, but I’d like to go for it.”

“What will you study?”

“Hospitality. I spend most of my shifts at The Sunbeam dreaming up all the ways I could improve it. I think…you know…maybe it’s something I’d be good at.”

“What an amazing plan! Let me know if I can help in any way. I still have some inheritance sitting in the bank if you need help on that front.”

“No!” Flo’s face had crumpled into a frown. “Sorry, I don’t mean to sound ungrateful, but I want to do this by myself. I want to prove all those fuckers who said I’d never achieve anything with my life wrong. If I took a handout it would feel like I’d cheated.”

“I get that. But don’t ever feel you can’t ask for help. God knows you’ve helped me plenty over the years.”

“How are you anyway?”

“I feel like shit, but I can’t tell if that’s from the shock of what’s happened or the vodka you plied me with last night.”

“I still can’t believe they did that to you.”

“Me neither. Do you know the weirdest thing though?”

“Tell me.”

“I’m kind of relieved about Alex. It’s like I’ve been hanging onto the hope of being with him for so long, but now he’s been such a massive arsehole, I’m finally free to move on. That’s not to say I’m not also massively heartbroken,” Kate added with a wry smile. “The stuff with Maddie feels way worse. I’m not sure I can, or want to ever forgive her.”

“I never got what you saw in Alex if I’m honest. He’s so slimy.”

“Slimy?”

“Yeah, those shiny suits, slicked back hair. It’s like he’s trapped in the eighties.”

“You can’t deny he’s gorgeous though.”

“Maybe a bittoogorgeous. Men like that are alright for a while, but I’d get so bored looking at that face long term. I mean, there’s nothing interesting about it is there?”

“I’m not sure I get what you mean.”

“Who’s your celebrity crush?”

“Daniel Craig.”

“Exactly. His eyes are a bit wonky and his ears stick out. He’sinterestinggorgeous, notboringgorgeous like Alex.”

“You really are one of a kind,” said Kate. “I can’t think of anyone who could cheer me up like you can.”

“Well if you love me that much, why haven’t you shoved an egg McMuffin in front of me yet?”
