Eggs and bacon eaten, showered, and Billy the Kid safely secured, we take the Four Wheeler out to the garage. I love her gasp when I pull open the large bay doors and show off the collection of birds my grandad, and I have bought over the years.

“Wow. Impressive.”

I lazily find the keys to the new Kodiak, just wanting to watch her face as she takes in my life’s work. This isn’t something I’ve ever shared with anyone but Grandad, and I think he would have approved of Joey. Aside from being sexy as hell, she’s capable. Knows and understands the tools on the walls. I stand in awe of her as she steps up and peeks into the open hood of Billy Jean. What I thought was fixed isn’t, and she won’t fly anymore, so I just left the hood off. After the last shaky flight, I’ve come to terms it might have been her last.

“You’re giving up on her?”

“Not exactly, but she probably won’t fly safely again.”

“I think she can.” Her voice trails off as she struts around the old beast.

The hope in her voice is all I need to reaffirm my love for this woman.

“She’s old. Might need to donate her to a museum at this point.”

Standing back and wiping her hands on her jeans, she just shrugs. “Maybe, but if it’s all the same to you when we get back, I’d like to take a look.”

“Of course, it’s fine with me. What’s mine is yours if you’ll stay.”

“I told you I would stay. Are you scared I’ll leave? You like me that much, huh?”

Her eyes search mine. Maybe I’m wrong, and she wants to hear me say it out loud.

I don’t, though. I clear my throat and point to the shiny new plane my clients expect to be chaperoned in. Might not have in-flight snacks, but if they’re willing to pay my big price tag, I’ll haul whatever they want almost anywhere.

“Yeah, I like you, all right.” It slips out as she turns to get into the cockpit, giving me a view of that thick ass of hers. The memories of how she feels make me growl, but she likes it. Laughing with flushed cheeks and a knowing look in her eyes.

I hurry to my side and get settled in, starting her up. Driving the bird out of the hanger and onto the strip like I have a million times before suddenly feels different with such precious cargo.

At takeoff, she bursts into a giddy laugh. She’s never flown before. She had never been out of her little town, and she took a big leap to come to me, so I’m going to do everything in my power to show her the world. Call me fucking Aladdin, and I’ll take her on as many magic carpet rides as she wants. Show her mountains, then the sea. Islands both hot and cold, so she can decide which she likes better. This is just the start of our adventure. The fun has only just begun.
