She has said the words more than a dozen times since we got together.
The outcome would possibly be different if I tried to be a hero. Things could be worse, or maybe they wouldn’t be as bad as they are.
I didn’t feel like a coward until we were flying home a man lighter, each of us too lost in our own heads to talk about what happened.
“Where is he?” she asks after long moments of us holding the other in silence.
“Houston,” I answer. “Slick stayed behind with him.”
“And his prognosis?”
“Mentally or physically?”
Sadness bleeds into her eyes.
“Last we heard they were unable to save his leg.”
“Oh God,” she sobs, her hand lifting to cover her mouth.
“Amputation was supposed to happen earlier today, but they’re having a hard time keeping his vitals stable enough for surgery.”
“Has he woken up?”
I take a deep breath. “Slick said he was aware enough to tell her to get lost.”
“So she’s coming home?”
I shake my head. “She told him to shut the fuck up and start healing.”
I give her a weak smile, but she can tell from my tone that it wasn’t a joke.
“Once he’s able to be moved, they’ll transport him to the VA hospital in Albuquerque.”
“When he gets better then he’ll return to Cerberus?”
I shrug. “I don’t know if he’ll ever come back here.”
I pull her head to my chest, needing just a little more of her warmth before I can face any of those repercussions.
Kincaid was adamant that my position with the team is secure, but he never explained what this injury could mean for Aro.
I hold the love of my life to my chest, wondering if any of the other guys have ever considered walking away and finding a less dangerous job.
Just the idea of not being able to come home to her one day rips at me from the inside. I’ve felt it on every mission I’ve been on since she came into my life, but the reality of the risks we take is hitting me a little harder this time.
Aro is alive, but he isn’t whole.
I have no idea what that’s going to mean for him.
I guess I can just be grateful that Slick is there. If anyone can get through to the man, it’s her.
