I laughed. “I meant you didn’t make me want to wreck the car. And it looks like I didn’t make you want to grab the wheel either.”

She beamed at me. How had I ever resisted whatever this was between us? Was it stronger now that I’d acknowledged it? Or was it stronger now that I could finally do something about it?

“You definitely made me want to yank it a few times.”

“Maybe you should drive back.”

Her brow furrowed. “I’m not sure I want to go back.”

We were in our own bubble where there was no family drama, no homeless people to save, no work.

I could breathe. Because of her. And the second we started back for the city, that invisible hand would clamp around my neck and squeeze.

“You should live here. It’s close enough to the city without being in it.”And then you wouldn’t be who knew where in the world.

“It still doesn’t feel like mine.”

“Does anything ever really feel like ours?”

Her breaths came in slow and deep. “No.”

“Do you still hate me?” My breathing matched hers. Slow punches of my lungs. In. Out. In. Out.

“Hate is such a strong word.”

I brushed the corner of her mouth with my thumb. “We’ve made a lot of progress, sweetheart.”

“You called me that the first night.”

“A few times as I recall.” I grinned. “Do you prefer Barn?”

Her lips flattened. “I can’t believe I’m going to say this, but it’s growing on me.”

It was as if she’d lit a fire in me. I felt... I wasn’t sure what. I justfelt.

“Give me another day and you’ll want to spend a week with me.”

That mouth turned up. “Let’s not get carried away.”

“Not sure I can help it.”

Closer. Closer. Closer.

She drew me in just as she had been from the second I laid eyes on her.

“Kane,” she whispered.

“Don’t tell me no.” We were a breath apart. I burned to do something we couldn’t take back. Something reckless. Something for me.

“You’re more dangerous than the ocean,” she said as she craned her neck.

If I moved, my lips would be on hers.

“And you’re not scared of me.”

Her fingers dug into my back. “I’m terrified.”

“There’s only one way to conquer—”
