She smashed her mouth to mine before I could finish. That fire she’d started inside me... she’d doused gasoline on it. There was nothing in the world beyond us. No sand. No sea. No wind. No fear.

Just us.

This. This was what I’d missed out on for so many years. This yearning to be touched. To be kissed. To be devoured. To want. To take.

I thought I’d known the pleasure of a woman’s touch before, but I was a fool. JoJo was a goddess. A powerful goddess who had taken me down with little more than a kiss.

She whimpered, her hands exploring with frantic motion. As if we only had seconds left.

I cupped my hand on the back of her neck. Her skin was warm and soft. Need pulsed through my veins as something primal coursed through my blood.

She slipped her tongue into my mouth. We dueled, much like when we argued with words. But this was a battle for pleasure.

Everywhere her fingers touched me were like pinpricks of fire. She’d done something to me. Something I wasn’t sure I’d come back from.

She ripped her mouth from mine, and I chased her with my lips, unable to stop. She allowed me to brush them together once more before backing away again.

“We-we shouldn’t have done that,” she panted.

“Oh yes we should have.”

There was nothing she could say to change my mind about that. Any excuse would be weak at best. What had just happened was too potent to be denied or ignored.

“Kane. We can’t.”

I put my finger up to her lips. “At least let me enjoy this for five seconds.”

“That’s all?”

I pulled her closer. It was as if all the time and distance between us was erased. “No. And kissing you is one thing I definitely want to do over again. Over. And over. And over.”

“You were right,” she said quietly.

“I know. But what are we talking about specifically?”

She smacked my back. “We shouldn’t change a thing about our... relationship.”

She choked on that last word.

“Relationship?” I pounced on her discomfort.

“You know what I mean.”

“I’m afraid I don’t.”

She threaded her fingers through mine and tugged me toward the house. “I’m not indulging you.”

“We’ll see about that.”

She’d kissed me. And little did she know she’d ripped off the lid to a box that I didn’t want to go back on. She’d accepted our past and embraced it as part of who we were. That felt huge.

She hopped up the steps to the boardwalk, and I stayed rooted in the sand. We were almost eye level. And that intensity ramped up between us.

“Indulge me.”

“Are you trying to make me a pushover?” Her fingers tightened on mine.

“Not a chance.” I squeezed her fingers back. “Kiss me again.”
