“But tea never gave anybody loose lips.”

That was what I was afraid of. I needed to keep my wits, especially around Kane.

I bit my lip. “What about Alma?”

He went hard. “What about her?”

“It feels wrong to be sneaking around.”

“Who’s sneaking around? I’d be more than happy to tell her.”

I nearly doubled over. Was he just using me? To get back at her?

He closed his eyes and drew in a deep breath. “Alma doesn’t give a damn about anyone but Alma. Don’t forget that.”

“It would be a good way to get back at her. To pursue me,” I said flatly.

“That’s not what this is and you know it. Tell me you’ve ever felt anything like that kiss out there.”

His passion was contagious. He felt things much more than I’d given him credit for. When we’d met, I thought he didn’t care about anything.

I was beginning to see how wrong I was.

“Never.”

He gave me a satisfied nod. “Questions over tea is on tonight’s agenda.”

“Let’s hit the pause button on questions.” We’d talked about a lot of things. I needed a break.

“The problem with the laundry room is the seating isn’t that comfortable.”

“Do you have a couch in yours?”

He lifted a brow. “That’s not a bad idea. Maybe a fireplace too.”

“You could start a trend.”

He seemed to scoot closer, though he hadn’t moved. “I don’t think I want to share this habit.”

I warmed. The laundry room was our thing. I didn’t know what I wanted from Kane, only that I liked sharing something with him.

I’d doomed this weekend before it started. With every turn, he’d proven me wrong. Could we actually get along?

“Tomorrow you’re going to teach me the Cunningham secret to winning cards. Then I’m going to grill a steak and we’ll have a seafood feast—”

What sounded like a door slamming interrupted him.

“Did you hear that?” I asked.

He had already jumped off the dryer.

“Mom!”

A knot formed in my throat.

Not now.

I’m not ready.
