“Mom! Where are you?”

I rushed around Kane, nearly knocking him over.

“Penelope? What are you doing here?” I met her in the hallway. “How did you get here?”

“I drove. And we just got a massive donation at Earth Warriors. Too big for me to call you about,” she said in a hurry. “Mom, you won’t believe it. It’s the biggest—”

Her gaze drifted over my shoulder.

I squeezed my eyes shut and stopped breathing. I’d promised to protect my daughter at all costs.

When I’d asked Kane for help, I’d known they’d meet. I’d just thought there would be more time.

“Mom?” Penelope dragged the word out.

I’d lied to my daughter about one thing. When she’d asked where her father was, I’d told her I didn’t know.

Her eyes were glued on Kane. I couldn’t turn around. I couldn’t look at him. I couldn’t look at her.

This wasn’t supposed to happen.

Slowly, I forced myself to pivot.

Kane was rooted in place just outside the laundry room. He stared at Penelope.

Then his cold gaze drifted to me.

“JoJo. Why is my mirror image standing in front of me?”

I swallowed around the knot in my throat. When I opened my mouth to speak, only a puff of air came out.

The weight of each of their stares nearly crushed me.

Neither of them spoke.

They waited.

And waited.

My head spun. I couldn’t deny the truth. But I wasn’t sure I could speak it out loud.

I begged Penelope with my eyes to understand. Pleaded with her to forgive me for what I was about to say.

I couldn’t lose my daughter.

And I didn’t want to lose Kane.

I can’t do this.

You have to.

I sucked in a shallow breath.

Open your mouth.

Open.

Your.
