I padded to the door and tiptoed down the back staircase. Carefully, I opened the back door and slipped through.

As soon as my feet hit the sand, I felt like I took my first full breath since the ocean had had me in her grip.

Like a rope pulling me closer, I tromped through the sand toward the water’s edge. I dropped to the ground just out of reach of the surf.

The waves were a soothing lull. Salty spray sprinkled my feet. The early morning sun warmed my chilled bones.

I lay back and closed my eyes.

I drew in a deep breath and thanked the universe that I had survived. That I had another day to live. To make a difference.

Last night was a reminder of just how precious life was. How could I have forgotten?

* * *

Sand hit my feet.

Then more.

And more.

Then my ankles.

Am I being buried alive?

I blinked open my eyes. Tanned shins were in my field of vision.

“Most people would kill to have a place like that house to live in. Yet Barn chooses to sleep on the beach.”

I sat up.

Kane loomed over me, the cockyI don’t give a damnsmirk back on his face.

I glanced at my feet . . . which were buried.

He was still an ass.

I still couldn’t stand him.

See. Just like I thought. After a rest, everything was back to normal.

“What are you doing out here, JoJo?” Alma skipped over, speaking to me with thatsilly JoJotone she often used.

“Enjoying the beach.” I stretched and yawned.

“Everyone’s been looking for you. We’re taking the boat out.” Alma extended both hands toward me.

“The boat?”

The peace I’d felt evaporated in a nanosecond.

“The boat,” she confirmed, wiggling her fingers.

I placed my hands in hers and she pulled me up. Kane swiped my blanket from the sand.

“I’ve got that.”

He shook it out and draped it over his arm, effectively ignoring me.
