Can’t you put on a shirt?

I shielded my gaze and looked away from his bare-chested body. Alma skipped ahead toward our grandparents in her postage stamp of a bathing suit.

Kane kept in step beside me. I risked a glance in his direction.

He wasn’t looking at my sister in her skimpy bikini.

He was fixed on me and my rat-nest hair and flannel pajamas that should have been too warm for this time of year.

“Whatever it is you want to say, just come out with it.” I couldn’t stand the silence. I couldn’t stand that penetrating gaze that still seemed to be scanning my soul.

He shrugged. “I don’t want to say anything.”

I narrowed my eyes. “Oh yes you do.”

“Fine. I’m trying to figure out how you’re going to survive on a boat in the”—he waved his hand dismissively—“wherever-the-whales-are Ocean when you look like you’re about to throw up at the prospect of going out on a yacht.”

He was right. I was terrified of boats of any size. But I was determined to conquer my fears, especially when it protected the whales.

I lifted my chin. “I will do whatever it takes to protect those animals.”

He sighed. “Take some swimming lessons before you go. I’m not going to the Antarctic to save your ass if you jump in the water to throw yourself in front of a whale.”

CHAPTEREIGHT

KANE

I bangedmy heel against the dryer in a steady rhythm.

What was I doing in the laundry room again?

Sitting on the dryer and thinking.

Like it was some sort of sanctuary.

I’d come to the Hamptons this weekend looking for a little fun and sun and some much-needed relaxation. But I was restless.

I missed work. I missed the city.

And I’d had enough togetherness time with strangers. What should have been a nice day on a yacht hadn’t been all that great. And Mr. Cunningham had even let me drive.

But JoJo had faked a sudden stomach bug, and while that was her prerogative, I didn’t like the thought of her being scared or sick.Don’t they know she can’t swim?My attention should’ve been on a day of beer and seafood on the open water. Instead, I might as well have stayed behind too.

And Alma . . . she was fun. I loved the attention. She treated me like I was a god. But her arms around my neck didn’t have the same effect as they had the day before. I’d blown her off when she’d wanted to fool around below deck.

I wasn’t in the mood.

Had I betrayed her by looking at her sister naked?

I didn’t think so. It wasn’t like JoJo and I had come together in a fit of passion.

Bang.

Bang.

Bang.

I swung my feet in a faster rhythm.
