“She let them measure her fingers. Can you believe it?” He shook his head as if stunned.

“What was the result?”

Patrick stared at Kane for what felt like an eternity. These two enjoyed toying with one another way too much.

Patrick dropped his feet from the coffee table and leaned forward. “They’re a match.”

“Does that prove she killed him?” I asked.

Patrick wagged his finger at me. “She’s smart. And skeptical. Ever think about becoming a lawyer?”

“Absolutely not,” I groaned.

“The handprints around the neck match hers. And unless there was something disturbing going on between mother and son, the nail marks on the back of his neck are consistent with the prints. Like she strangled him.” He made the motion with his own hands.

“She killed her own son?” That was impossible. What mother could . . . Alma’s cruel face flashed in my mind.

“It gets better. Somebody in the department forgot to mention the bank manager said Mrs. Rhodes came by the day he died to get into the deposit box. Can you believe it? She strangles him and heads straight for the bank.” Patrick propped his feet up.

“So Penelope is cleared?” I ached for the boy who’d needlessly lost his life. His mother had nearly ruined another innocent life, and I just wanted the situation to be over for my daughter.

“Mrs. Rhodes is in lockup right this very minute. Penelope is free and clear. She sued Penelope because she saw an opportunity for more money.”

Kane dropped his head back to his pillow. I squeezed his hand. Everything felt too good to be true, but I had to stop expecting the worst.

Penelope was innocent. Time had proved that.

“I promised the detectives when Penelope feels up to it they can ask her some questions about Rhodes’s relationship with his mother. They want to shore up their case, though I’d say it’s a slam dunk.” Patrick dramatically slammed his folder. “On to the next one.”

He tapped his lips. “What am I going to do now that I’m not so preoccupied with Zegas family cases?”

“Until Alma is convicted, you aren’t done,” Kane spat. “I can’t believe they set bond and she made it.”

“A minor setback.” Patrick clenched his teeth. “She will serve time and a lot of it for what she’s done.”

“I don’t like the judge. He’s corrupt.”

I blanched at Kane. That was a heavy accusation. But he would know.

“Another setback. We’ll try to get it in front of a jury if we need to. They’ll convict.”

How could he be so certain? I didn’t share his confidence. So far, Alma had gone free at every turn.

“If she walks, I want it taken care of. I’m tired of screwing around.” Kane clenched his jaw.

“Let’s talk about legal matters within our control,” Patrick suggested. “You both have substantial assets. What are we thinking for the prenup?”

“We’re not having one.” Kane spoke before I could. He was already irritated by the conversation about Alma and sounded furious Patrick had suggested a prenup.

“Just checking.” Patrick shrugged as if he’d known all along we wouldn’t want one. “The wills are in order. Penelope gets everything both of you have. Except Kane’s.”

I snapped my head toward my soon-to-be husband. He could do as he pleased with everything he had, but he was so generous with Penelope I assumed he’d want her to have everything.

He glared at Whitley.

“She’s going to find out you give a boatload of money to Earth Warriors anyway.”

My jaw dropped. “What is he talking about?”
