“I contacted Orem Foster on your behalf.” Patrick glanced at Kane. So Kane had put him up to it. “They’ve reconsidered your offer.”

I wanted to be irritated at Kane for meddling but couldn’t be.

“Can you facilitate the transaction?”

“I have a friend who’s the best at real estate law. He’ll make sure everything goes smoothly.”

I nodded. “Give Orem a fair price. I don’t want him to feel like he got screwed.”

“It’s kind of my job to make people feel that way.” Patrick shrugged.

I rubbed my temples. My life had become something infinitely more interesting now that Kane was in the picture . . . and our new extended family.

I looked over at Penelope, who was peacefully sleeping. Every day she stayed awake just a little longer. My sweet girl was going to be okay.

We all were.

“Last order of business,” Patrick said. “When should I line up the officiant for your wedding?”

“I know a lady.” Kane smirked. “From what I hear she has a busy social schedule, but she’d probably fit me in.”

I didn’t even want to know how he had a wedding officiant on standby.

It seemed selfish to think of getting married when the people I loved most were still healing. I wanted to marry Kane. Felt this urgent need I couldn’t explain to do so.

Time suddenly seemed more precious after everything we’d been through.

“Can we do it soon?”

Kane’s grin broadened. “I knew you couldn’t wait.”

“Like you can either,” Patrick muttered.

Kane motioned to his friend, who pulled a small box out of his pocket.

“Let’s make this a little more official, shall we?” He opened the box and pulled out a simple diamond ring. It glittered in the light.

My stomach fluttered. The jewelry wasn’t ostentatious.

“It’s beautiful,” I whispered.

“I wanted to get a statement ring. Then I saw this one and knew it was perfect.” He slipped it on my finger.

“A statement ring?” Something inside me clicked into place. We’d just taken another step forward in our future.

“A rock the size of his head so everyone would know you’re his,” Patrick said.

“Oh. Well, that would’ve been nice, but I like this one.” I admired the ring on my hand.

I never thought I’d have this . . . completeness. A partner. Someone to walk with me through thick and thin.

“Wait, you picked this out? When?”

“While you were sleeping.” Kane winked. “You didn’t think I’d let someone else pick out a ring?”

Of course not.

“I don’t want to wait,” I said quietly. I flicked my gaze to Penelope. I wanted her to be there, to have everything in place, but this “need to be one with Kane” superseded having the perfect wedding.
