Daniel studied me from across the table. I kept retreating into my own head, my mind wandering down the rabbit hole. I could barely think straight.

I just wanted Penelope to come out of the coma and start to breathe on her own. And to know Alma and her ex-con boy toy would never hurt her again.Charged with assault.I’d gotten sloppy on that front. I hadn’t wanted to know anything about him. That was a mistake.

I covered JoJo’s hand with my own. “I didn’t ask what you want to do with these people. It’s not my sole decision. My head is just . . . all over the place.”

“I’m not quite sure I understand the options.”

Daniel lifted a brow.

JoJo swallowed hard. “I’ve spent my entire life trying to save lives. Not end them.”

Of course her big heart didn’t consider vigilante justice. Part of me resented she didn’t want an eye for an eye, but mostly, I admired her.

In some ways, having Donato Salvatore wipe those two off the face of the earth was the easy way out. For them and for me.

“Can’t we let the justice system do what it’s supposed to do?” she asked.

I snorted, completely jaded from my years working in the legal world. If only it were that simple.

Daniel folded his hands on the table and leaned forward. “The problem if they disappear is that suspicion will fall on you, considering the circumstances. Even if we keep them unassociated with the accident, it’s not a secret how you feel about her.”

Usually, I was the one mapping out scenarios, but my head was a jumbled mess.

My instinct was to say I’d take the risk. Instead, I kept my mouth shut.

I dropped my chin to my chest.

Penelope would be disappointed I’d even considered this option.

Could I live with two people’s deaths on my hands?

Yes. I could.

Because they deserved it for what they’d done to my daughter.

“Get as much information and tangible evidence as you can, then let them go. Give them to McCormick.”

JoJo abruptly stood. “I need to see Penelope.”

I grabbed her hand and squeezed in encouragement before letting her go.

Once the door was shut, Daniel was back to business. “Are you sure?”

“No, I’m not sure.” I plowed a hand through my hair. “But it’s not only me I have to think about. If it were, I’d do it myself with my bare hands.”

Understanding shadowed his features. “We’ll keep them a few days to make them understand the gravity of the situation.”

“I should have final divorce papers on Monday if all goes to plan. Make her sign them. Don’t let her go until she’s signed them and video her confession.” I wasn’t above that. At least she’d know there was evidence on her.

If I was going to spare her life, I could at least get mine back in the process. And a finalized divorce was the last major piece to that.

“No problem.”

I pointed my head toward the door. “Get out of here. If you can stand to be around Whitley, you’re more than welcome at JoJo’s place.” Could I speak for her? In this case, I felt sure she wouldn’t mind.

“Vivian said we’d stay as long as you need. For some reason, she likes you,” he muttered dryly.

“Because I saved you.”
