My shirt was no longer white. Blood stained the fabric.

I crawled to JoJo. “Help her.”

Instead of responding, he set to work on JoJo, pressing her chest in rapid succession.

Before he could give her breath, water spewed from her mouth. She choked and coughed.

Her eyes opened and found mine.

She was alive.

Barn was alive.

The bodyguard typed furiously on his phone. “You want cops and the hospital? Or our doc?”

“Cops. Alma shot me.” Her unmoving body was behind us. Was she dead? “I don’t care about the medical care. Whoever is the best for JoJo.”

With a gloved hand, he rummaged through Alma’s purse. “Call ’em. I gotta get out here.”

My fingers shook as I dialed 9-1-1. I cradled JoJo’s head in my lap.

“Shot. Docks. Help.”

I couldn’t manage any other words when the operator answered.

The adrenaline had died down. I was woozy and hurting.

“Sir? Sir?”

“Hurry.”

The phone slipped out of my hands and I lay down.

Can’t . . . stay . . . awake.

JOJO

Beep.Beep. Beep.

Penelope.

I was back in Penelope’s room. She was breathing. I heard the machine.

She was okay.

I opened my eyes.

It wasn’t Penelope in my view.Iwas in the hospital bed.

And the machine was hooked up to me.

What happened?

The day had been crazy and frantic. But I remembered Penelope back in her room.

Then I . . . I’d texted Alma.
