I shivered as if hitting the icy water of the East River all over again.

My sister had tried to kill me. Had nearly succeeded.

Kane.

I sat up, a wave of dizziness washing over me.

There’d been so much blood. He hadn’t been moving.

He couldn’t be dead. I’d feel it if he were.

But his eyes had been so vacant.

I had to find him.

I swung my legs over the side of the bed. The IV hooked into my arm stretched. I yanked it out but swayed when my feet hit the floor.

“Miss Cunningham! You shouldn’t be out of bed.” A nurse rushed forward, placing a steadying hand on my back.

“Kane. I have to see Kane.”

The nurse smiled patiently. “Mr. Zegas is in surgery.”

“Surgery?”

There’d been so much blood. What happened?

“He suffered a gunshot wound to the back.” She leaned closer. “The police want to speak to you as soon as you’re up for it.”

“I didn’t shoot him.” Panic bubbled up. Had Alma managed to frame me?

She clearly had become a criminal mastermind in her free time.

The nurse placed a hand on my shoulder. “I didn’t mean to upset you. It’s normal in these situations for them to talk to everyone involved. They want your version of events.”

I knew that.

What if Alma had already tainted their view? She could be persuasive, not to mention she was beautiful and wealthy.

“What about Kane? Is he going to be okay?” I couldn’t lose him.

Who would catch me when I fell? I’d grown so dependent on him. I couldn’t nurse Penelope back to health without him by my side.

I drew in a deep breath.

My chest hurt, maybe from being waterlogged . . . I wasn’t sure.

I could make it without Kane.

I just didn’t want to.

“He lost a lot of blood.”

I didn’t much care for the unspoken.

“When will he be out of surgery? I’d like to know the minute he is.” I sounded as demanding as he normally did, but couldn’t find it in me to be overly polite.

My world had literally fallen apart. It took a massive amount of restraint not to scream.
