“I hear you.” I’d just have to see how things went.

“Good. We should have everything arranged by this evening.”

JoJo’s shoulders relaxed at the news.

I was relieved to be getting closer to Penelope too. We all needed to be under one roof. For protection.

We’d gotten in trouble when we’d split up.

“Will you let Elliott know what’s going on?” I asked as soon as the doctor was gone.

“Already on it.”

I rolled my head to the side. It still felt heavy. “I didn’t mean for you to become my secretary.”

“It’s only temporary.” Her fingers pecked at the flip phone.

“I kind of like needing to be waited on hand and foot by you.” I couldn’t smirk. It hurt too much to move.

Why did my face hurt? I was shot in my back.

“I’m sure you do.” She held up the phone. “He has men stationed at the exits and two outside Penelope’s room. Dr. Ellis is going to move her to the sitting area and allow you to be set up next to her. And he has a team who will escort us to Savannah House.”

“And I thought I was good at getting stuff done,” I said under my breath.

“How did you find me?”

“I woke up. You were gone. I panicked. Found my phone. Saw the texts.”

She put the phone in her lap. “That doesn’t explain how you knew where I was.”

“I have a tail on Alma. Elliott guided me to the shipyard.” Thankfully we’d kept surveillance on her.

He shouldn’t have let the altercation escalate as far as he did, but if he hadn’t been there, I’d have bled out and JoJo would’ve drowned.

“Thank you. For rescuing me. Again.”

I tried to stretch my arm toward her, but it took too much effort. “I’ll do it as many times as it takes. But we are teaching you to swim.”

She drew in a long breath, winced as if it were painful, and exhaled. “I need to learn.”

“I won’t let you drown.”

She took my fingers in hers. “I know.”

“I vaguely remember Nurse Ana mentioning there’s a pool on the bottom floor. You’ll be like a fish in no time.”

“I just want to be able to keep my head above water.” She shuddered. Fear was in every syllable of her words. “If I’d been able to do that, you could’ve concentrated on her instead of saving me.”

“Do you think I could see anything but you?”

If she were an Olympic swimmer I’d have still gone in after her.

“You wouldn’t be hurt.”

“She came with a gun. A person doesn’t bring one to a meeting with someone they hate unless they intend to use it.” A chill raced through me. It hadn’t occurred to me Alma had planned to use the weapon on JoJo.

“She didn’t have to. She knew I couldn’t swim,” she said bitterly. “Drowning isn’t as messy. And easier to make look like an accident.”
