“That woman is most definitely an opportunist.”

JoJo straightened her scarf. Where had she gotten clean clothes?

“Do you have any idea where she might be?” she asked me.

“No. We’re practical strangers. I spent most of my time trying to avoid her.” It was hard to believe I’d survived a marriage with her for so long.

My stubborn streak must be some kind of superhuman strength.

I hadn’t wanted the marriage to fail, but I also didn’t have anything to move on to. My life was the same with or without Alma in it before JoJo and Penelope showed up.

“They’ve tried the boyfriend. He’s missing too.”

I tried to think, but my head was still somewhat foggy from the pain meds. I’d insisted they cut them off and quickly reversed that call when the pain became intolerable.

“The obvious idea is that they’re together. I can’t imagine her going on the run. She doesn’t have the money to do it unless your mother helped her out.”

JoJo scowled. “Can you believe she only left a voicemail to blame me for the divorce? Her family is in the hospital and she behaves as if we don’t exist.”

“Aren’t you glad?”

“Yes,” she said petulantly. “But sometimes tragedy makes people see the error of their ways.”

I loved that she hoped for the best in people, even if it were impossible.

“Not to be a pessimist, but she isn’t coming around.”

She hung her head. “I know. I just want Penelope to have the kind of relationship I did with Grandma Josephine.”

“She’ll get that from my parents and Nancy.”

“They’re more than I could ask for.” She spoke with a reverence. I guessed it was in part for her lost family she’d loved and for the new family she’d acquired.

“Speaking of your parents, they came by to see you. I asked them to go be with Penelope since she was alone and I’m not technically released from the hospital.” She sounded uncertain.

“That’s exactly what I would’ve wanted if the decision were mine.”

“I hate thinking of her alone.”

“We’ll be there in a few hours.” I clasped her fingers in mine. “We’re going to be in trouble for having so many visitors.”

“Whitley asked Dr. Ellis to keep the sofa even if it has to go right outside the door.”

I groaned. “He’s planning on setting up camp.”

“He’s concerned. He tries to cover it up, but he’s worried.”

“If I kick the bucket, his income stream will immediately dry up.”

Her eyes rounded. “Kane! I meant for your well-being.”

“Me too.” But deep down, I knew she was right. He’d been there for me through tough times lately.

“Speaking of.” She held up the phone and shook it.

“Put it on speaker.” Oh how I wanted to grin. “None of my clients are in jail because of you, are they?”

“Alma just showed up at the police station. She’s beaten pretty badly.”
