“Not much to see, Dad. It’s two bedrooms, but only one of the bathrooms is working right now.” Holt polished off his beer and placed it in the recycling bin under the sink.

“Are you sure we shouldn’t just hire a plumber?” Baker’s skepticism couldn’t be more apparent.

“No need. Besides, Daniel’s agreed to cut down the rent while I get it fixed.”

“A shower isn’t the same thing as a car motor.” Baker folded her arms over her chest.

“When my bathroom is better than a spa, you’ll want to trade rooms.”

“Ifyou get it finished.”

“I’ll get the job done.” Holt’s eyes flashed as he gripped the edge of the counter. “I always do.”

“I bet you do,” Sonya said smugly.

“Time for that tour.” Mrs. Quinn led the charge, effectively defusing another explosive situation.

“You workedwith a private investigator once, right?”

Andrew blushed as we strolled out of Baker’s new apartment building. He’d confessed to following me, and I still enjoyed how uncomfortable it made him when I brought it up.

“I might have learned a few skills.”

“I’m looking to hire your services,” I said with a sly smile.

Andrew worried his lip with his teeth and shifted Ella’s carrier from one arm to the other. “What’s going on?”

“I want to know more about Mr. Hardaway. He doesn’t get all that cake for himself, and he’ll never tell me the truth.”

“Some stones are better left unturned,” he warned warily.

“I know.” I slowed my steps. “I’m curious.”

“Then we’ll see what we can dig up.” He winked at me. “For you, my services are free of charge.”

I put a hand over my heart. “Why, Counselor Dixon. A busy man like you doing a favor like that for me?”

“I’d do anything for you, Bright Side.”

“Even marry me?”

Andrew stopped dead. “Are you saying what I think you are?”

“Yeah. Someday, I want to marry you.”

“I’m going to hold you to that.” He caressed my cheek. “Soon?” he asked hopefully.

I placed my hand over his. “When we’re ready.”

A Few Weeks Later

“I need you.”

He froze as he closed the front door.
