“Did you like those?”

“If I didn’t, would I have asked about them?”

“I liked them too,” Andrew chimed in. Fabulous. Now both of them were giving me a hard time.

“How about yellow cake with chocolate icing? I’ll make the other kind for you tomorrow,” I said in attempt to be diplomatic.

Mr. Hardaway looked past me to Andrew. “This is what she does. She makes something good once, and then I have to keep coming back because I never know when she’ll have it again.”

“Pretty smart tactic, if you ask me.” Andrew inched closer to me so that our arms almost brushed.

“You work for her. You have to suck up,” Mr. Hardaway said, firing Andrew a look of disgust. “Fine. I’ll take the yellow. Make it three pieces.”

“Are you eating all these yourself?” I asked as I boxed them up.

“That’s none of your business. I’m buying them, and that’s all you need to know.”

Andrew looked at me wide-eyed and mouthed, “Yikes.”

“What kind of help are you anyway? You’re making her do all the work,” Mr. Hardaway said, his hostility directed at Andrew.

“Mr. Hardaway,” I said as I shook a bag open and placed the box inside.

“I’m just trying to help you out.”

“You weren’t interested yesterday.”

“See if I do it again.” He shoved money in the tip jar.

“Glad you came by,” I said. He growled. “I’ll have the cake you want tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow. Always tomorrow. I’m not as young as I used to be, you know.”

“I thought the doctor said you were going to live forever?”

“He did.”

“See you tomorrow,” Andrew said.

Mr. Hardaway leveled him with a look. “You won’t make it long.”

Chapter Sixteen

Trish

“He is prickly,”Andrew said as Mr. Hardaway disappeared down the sidewalk.

“Underneath all that, I think he’s a big softie.” I wiped down the counter and checked the clock. Almost time to shut it down.

“Why would you think that? Every time I’ve seen him, he’s grumpy. Actually, he’s rude.”

I gave Andrew a disapproving look. “We don’t know what’s going on with him,” I defended. “He’s harmless.”

“Then why do I feel like I’ve been slapped?” Andrew rubbed his cheek.

“Oh, stop it. He’s funny. You know he makes you laugh.”

“Yeah, he does,” he admitted begrudgingly. “Since I’m a terrible employee, I need to redeem myself. What can I do to get us out of here faster?”
