“We may have something else in the junk drawer.” I attached another wheel to a leg.

“My toolbox is next door if we need it,” Teague said over his shoulder.

“Should we tell dirty jokes? My mind just went in the gutter talking about toolboxes.” Miss Adeline thumbed through a magazine.

“We arenottelling dirty jokes.” I shot her a warning look that she ignored.

“Do you have any tequila? A few shots and the really good jokes would fly.” Beau picked up the fireman calendar from the end table.

“We arenotdoing tequila shots.”

Apparently Lincoln and I were sticks in the mud.

“Can we have a beer or is that off-limits too?” Beau tossed the calendar away in disgust.

“Don’t tell me you’re anti-calendar too?” Miss Adeline looked appalled.

“Looks to me like they’ll let anyone in that thing.” Beau reached into her tote bag. “Let’s redecorate downstairs.”

She took her tablet and sat on the floor by Miss Adeline’s chair.

“I said some chairs, wild woman.” Miss Adeline closed the magazine.

“We’ll see. I have a friend with an amazing shop. She’ll have the perfect pieces.” She held up the tablet.

“Don’t forget whatever we get is going to be ruined.” I scanned the instructions again. “Do you see this screw?”

Lincoln searched the plastic baggies and found the one I was looking for. “I’ll do this side.”

Teague towered over us. “Looks like I’m right on time. You’re almost done.”

“Hold this leg in place, please.” I directed him where we needed him. I lined up a screw and tightened it. “It’s your grill. Do you want to put the lid on?”

“I better so I don’t get any grief that I let you assemble the whole thing.”

I put the screwdriver in his hand. He tested the lid once he had it on.

“Where’s the charcoal?” Lincoln stood and smoothed his pants.

“By the counter.” Teague helped me to my feet. “Mind if I keep this on your balcony?”

I opened the French doors. “Not at all.”

“If you aren’t going to cook for us, then forget it,” Miss Adeline said.

“Whenever you want.”

Sirens wailed not too far away. Teague hustled outside and leaned over the rail.

“There’s a fire two blocks away.” He jogged through the apartment and out the front door.

Ash tried to follow, but I hurried and caught her before she slipped out. I went back to the balcony. Teague ran down the street toward the blaze.

My heart pounded. “He doesn’t have any equipment.” I looked at Beau helplessly as we watched him disappear.
