After he’d run off, we’d chased him. Watching him go in a building consumed in flames was heart-stopping. I felt like I hadn’t taken a breath until he’d emerged. Seeing that woman in his arms had been a crash of emotions.

She might’ve died without him. What ifhe’ddied?

I shuddered and tried to shove the fear out of my head.

“If someone needs help, I can’t leave them behind.” His voice was gruff.

There was something ingrained in him that went deeper than most. People ranged along the full spectrum when it came to helping others. He had an instinct to save people without thought.

Teague was selfless.

I admired and hated the quality at once. My hatred was pure selfishness because I didn’t like the way it made me feel to see him put himself in danger.

How many people were still living because of him?

He probably didn’t know.

“I belong at that fire station,” he said more to himself than to me.

It was obvious. I doubted he realized how hard of a time he was having letting it go. Who could blame him?

He’d had what he loved ripped away from him.

Now he was stuck because of me.

“Whether or not Zegas and Whitley get you reinstated, you need to quit your family company.”

He jerked his head toward me. “I can’t.”

“If your father wasn’t involved, would you want to work there?”

He focused back on the street and was quiet for a long time. “No.”

“Then don’t go back.”

“I have to. He’ll destroy the rescue—”

“We’ll figure it out.” I was terrified of what Mr. Hollingsworth would do and that hadn’t subsided since Teague had struck a deal with him.

That niggling fear wouldn’t go away. I couldn’t live like that.

If we were all going to be miserable anyway, Teague shouldn’t have to sacrifice so much.

“I’ll handle him.”

“He’s working you to the bone with these crazy hours and demands. We have no more certainty about things than we did before you agreed to his terms. It’s just a matter of time before he breaks the deal,” I said in a rush.

“He knows I talked to the lawyers about getting my job back.”

My eyes flared. “How?”

“Sometimes I’m pretty sure he’s watching me. Maybe Zegas or Whitley is in his back pocket too,” he said tightly. “He said I should think about our family name before I go forward.”

“He’s trying to take away what you love.”

“I already lost it,” he yelled. He eased to a stop at a red light and let out a long breath.

“Which is why you need to fight to get it back.”
