“My happiness is nothing compared to yours.”

It was as if he’d hit me with a sledgehammer. That was love.

He’d said the words, and they still hadn’t sunk in. But he proved with everything he did that I was the most important.

I didn’t know what to do with that.

“I will have a love-hate relationship every time you go out on a call, but it’s where you belong. Not stuck in a suit in a mailroom.”

He gripped the wheel. “We need a plan. And if I’m not getting that job back, there’s no reason to go through the hell he’s going to rain down on us.”

“You’ll get your job back.”

“How can you be so sure?”

I didn’t have an answer for that. Except he was innocent. He’d been unjustly let go.

“I have faith.”

He pulled over in front of a mansion but didn’t turn off the engine. He kept looking straight ahead, almost as if he couldn’t bear the sight of the house.

I reached for his hand. He didn’t immediately yield to my touch. I tangled our fingers. His were calloused and rough from hard work.

“I keep seeing his car at the fires.”

My grip went limp for a moment. “Whose car?” I asked carefully.

“His.”

“Do you think he’s responsible?” Teague’s father was a monster. I’d witnessed it time and again. That didn’t mean he was capable of murder . . . did it?

“He’d never get his hands dirty,” he said with disgust.

“Wouldn’t it be stupid to go to the scene of the crimes if he does have anything to do with it?” My head spun.

The heart attacks.

The fires.

His father.

My stomach rolled.

Teague was a lifesaver.

His father was a destroyer.

“I normally talk to Lincoln before acting.” His voice was stoic, detached.

“What are you going to do?” I squeezed his fingers.

“I thought if you were with me, it would stop me from wanting to confront him.” He finally looked toward the house. “Stay here.”

He pulled on the door handle.

I kept my grasp on him. “Teague?”

I mentally begged him not to get out of the truck. If his father was capable of... the worst kind of things, I didn’t want Teague to provoke him. Standing up to a crazy person was useless.
