“Funny that.” Father tapped his lips with his index finger. “She hasn’t been at the office much. Perhaps you should ask your friend . . . oh, whatishis name?”

My blood ran cold.

Teague and Lincoln looked at me, but I could only stare at our father.

“It’s not a good precedent for a healthy marriage to sneak around, sweetheart.” He had pretending to be a concerned father nailed perfectly.

“Beau, what the hell is he talking about?” Teague asked carefully.

“Ah, I remember his name now.”

Father narrowed his gaze, cutting straight through me. I wanted to hold on to my brothers as my knees weakened.

“Garrett Calhoun.”

Chapter Thirty-Seven

Cal

“Hollingsworth? You lost? Or are you moving stations?”

Teague stepped into my space, his jaw locked as he glared at me. “Are you fooling around with Beau behind my back?”

Shit.

I’d dreaded this moment for a long time.

Did Beau finally tell him about us?

I glanced over his shoulder to find he wasn’t alone. Lincoln was right behind him. He might have been in a suit, but he looked like he could beat my ass in about point three seconds.

Teague balled his fists. “I always wondered why she hated you. What did you do to hurt my sister?”

The station had gone silent. A few of the guys gathered to see what was going on.

“How long has this been going on?”

I stared at my friend, unsure what to say. But I wasn’t mad at him. I understood. Maybe not completely since I didn’t have a sister, but if I did, I sure as hell wouldn’t want her with someone the likes of me.

“Answer me.” His tone had gone quiet. That was almost more unnerving than his rage.

And some tiny speck of hope buried way down deep sprouted. If she’d finally told her brothers about me, what did that mean? I couldn’t see the point if she wasn’t going to hang around in New York more than five minutes. If she didn’t want to see more of me without sneaking around.

You can’t have her.

Now that we’d lost our cover, it was well and truly done. I hated myself for even thinking this could be a beginning.

I shrugged. “Nothing to say. Sorry you wasted a trip all the way over here.”

I got back to checking the truck. We’d just returned from a call, and I needed to make sure everything was back in place for the next one.

“You don’t think you should’ve asked me? What if she was your sister?”

I turned, holding his gaze. “I wouldn’t let her near a bastard like me.”

“I deserve to know.”

“Nothing for you to know.” My words were indifferent when I was anything but.
