“You keep sayingnothing. Are you saying Beau is nothing?”

I braced myself for a punch. Because the wild look on his face told me he was quickly running out of patience. The silent brother behind him looked ready to rumble too.

“No.”

And that one syllable gave away that she was more to me than anything. Beau was everything. Always had been. Always would be.

He flinched. “I’m not leaving until you tell me what you did to make her hate you.”

I gestured toward a chair by the wall. “Take a load off. Cause you’re gonna be here a while.”

“You’re like a brother to me. We went through the academy together.”

I couldn't stand that he thought I’d betrayed his trust. But I had. At first, when Beau and I had started sneaking around, there wasn’t a reason to tell him. I wasn’t going to ask permission to see his sister. Hell, maybe that would’ve been the right thing to do.

The longer things went on, the harder it was to tell Teague.

And Beau didn’t want to.

What she wanted was more important to me.

Then we were done, and she moved to another country.

I didn’t see a reason to potentially lose a friend when my relationship with Beau was in the past.

I folded my arms and leaned against the fire truck. “I saw in the paper she’s getting married. Shouldn’t you be grilling that guy instead of me?”

“You don’t read the paper,” Teague said. “And I’ll deal with him too.”

It’s him you should be concerned about, buddy. He’s given you a real reason to fight.

And I probably should mention what that bastard had done to Beau. Because if Teague knew, he wouldn’t be here with me right now.

But it was my place to protect her.

I couldn’t stand the thought of her married, especially to someone like him. And as soon as I got off work, Alex Davenport and I were going to have a little chat.

“Hollingsworth, are you disrupting my station?” Captain Dunn emerged from his office, looking pissed.

“Just need a word with Cal.”

“Do it on his off time. The department doesn’t pay him to socialize.” He turned on his heel and went out back, undoubtedly to smoke since he had a two pack a day habit.

“I can’t get suspended, man,” I said.

Teague’s face hardened and he pointed at me. “You’re going to have a lot more to worry about than that when I get the truth.” He jerked his head toward the door. “Let’s get out of here.”

His brother gave me a long, menacing stare before following him toward the back door. Somehow that was more intimidating than a verbal threat.

Teague turned around and walked backward. “Stay away from my sister.”

Not until she tells me she’s done.

Stab.

That thought hurt worse than any punch Teague could land.

There had always been an expiration date on whatever it was Beau and I were doing. Suddenly, it felt like it just got a lot closer.
