“Cal! You open this door right now. Caaaalllll!”

Joe hadn’t moved, still standing beside me. He was silent. Unmoving as a statue.

Wham. Wham. Wham.

“Joe Calhoun, I haaateee you!”

Is this what he’s been living with all this time?

Christina was always a loud mouth, but I put up with her because my brother loved her.

His head hung and he was withdrawn. This man had saved more than one of his brothers at the station from fires. He was a leader. In command.

And that woman had reduced him to this shell.

It was so wrong.

Blue lights flashed. I pulled back the curtain. A squad car had just rolled up in front of the building. I squinted to make out who was here.

Egan and McCreedie.Thank goodness for small mercies. Joe and I saw them both a lot on the job.

Bam. Bam. Bam.

“Cal, I swear if you don’t open this door!”

“Christina, you gotta hold it down.” McCreedie's muffled voice came through the door.

“Oh great. You’ll both side with him. I want some objective cops.”

I put a hand to my forehead and squeezed. Maybe it was better if Joe was zoned out and didn’t hear any of this.

“We’re not siding with anyone, but right now you’re the one disturbing the peace,” Egan said.

“Get her out of here,” Old Man Casey shouted.

“I’m not going anywhere until Joseph Calhoun explains why he almost killed Lee.”

Really? That was pretty much self-explanatory.

“Christina, if you come with us now and promise not to cause another scene, we’ll let you go.”

“We’ll drive you home. This stress isn’t good for the baby. A night in a cell wouldn’t be either.”

She mumbled something I couldn’t hear. There was blessed silence for several seconds and then what sounded like heavy footsteps on the stairs.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

The knocking was faint.Am I supposed to answer that?

I cracked open the door.

Egan rolled his eyes. “I don’t think she’s coming back.” He glanced behind me toward Joe. “And we know exactly why you did what you did.”

“Thanks for coming by.” I kept my body wedged between the door and the frame.

“Try to keep it down,” he said with a smirk before giving me a fist-bump. “All right, people. Show’s over.” He jogged down the stairs.

Doors closed one by one until I was the only person looking into the hall. I rubbed the back of my neck. Weren’t we too old for this mess?
