“Sorry for the trouble,” Joe said quietly.

Was he for real? His wife had turned into an entitled, selfish bitch and he was apologizing?

I closed the door and shook his shoulders. “You didn’t do anything wrong.”

He refused to look at me.

I turned him in the direction of the short hall. “Take my room. You’ll sleep better.”

Like a robot he did as I said, trudging toward my bedroom. I grabbed my phone, keys, wallet, and some clothes.

“I have to be at the station early,” Joe said.

I dropped his bag on the floor. “Sleep well.”

I waited until he sat on the bed before I closed the door. What a night. I sank onto the sofa and leaned my head against the back. I’d never sleep now. I was too amped up.

Had all of this really happened? I couldn’t believe Christina had cheated on Joe in the first place. She should’ve had the decency to be honest. Finding out she didn’t love him anymore would’ve been hard on him, but this? It was a disaster. Beyond cruel.

And maybe I didn't live in that house with them, but Joe had been a good husband. He didn’t deserve the humiliation. He’d have to live with the evidence of her indiscretions for the rest of his life.

For such a big city, it was a small community. He’d see that kid or Christina and Lee, and it would be a sucker punch every time.

For once, I couldn’t fix the mess.

I hated that.

My phone burned in my palm. I wanted to give Old Man Casey another reason to call the cops with a noise complaint. Beau’s cries of pleasure as I forgot everything else but what it felt like to be inside her.

You can’t leave Joe.

I opened the text app.

You don’t have the money for a hotel.

I pressed the screen to our last conversation.

Need you now.

I practically felt the words. She’d showed me just how much she’d needed me. Beau was bold. Unafraid to go after what she wanted. And since we’d started this tryst, I’d demanded of her what I wanted too.

My thumbs hovered over the screen.I can’t bring her here.

The phone vibrated in my hand.

Change of scene.

A second later an address on West 56thappeared.

I put on my jeans and a fresh shirt before I shoved my wallet in my back pocket. For a minute I stood in front of the coffee table, looking between the front door and my bedroom door. I hesitated.

What are you gonna do? Cuddle Joe all night?

If I were in his position, I’d want me to go.

You’re thinking with the wrong head, Cal.

I swiped my keys off the coffee table and slipped out the front door.
