“What is so urgent?”

“I haven’t mentioned it, but I’m working on a development of a new seaport in London. I’m very close to securing the property. Once I do, it will be very lucrative for us.” I’d tossed around the idea with Cagan. That counted, right?

He lifted a brow. “What’s the issue?”

“I’ve kept our names a secret from the owner of the property to keep from paying a premium. I don’t know if he’s become privy to that, but he suddenly wants a lot more money. I don’t want to lose this deal.”

“Why haven’t you mentioned you were pursuing this before now?”

Because I just made it up?

“I didn’t want to bother you with it until I was certain things were going to happen.”

He scrutinized my face and it felt like my every thought was laid open for him to read. “It’s after midnight in London.”

“Our business has no set hours.”

“If it’s lucrative as you say, I want it done.”

I nearly sagged in relief. Where was I going to find a property to put a seaport on in London?

I’d worry about that later.

“Yes, Daddy.” I kissed his cheek again. This time it didn’t feel quite so forced. I was almost free of this sham of an evening. “Give the Davenports my best, please.”

He nodded, though his fingers were tight around his drink. “You will make it up to Alex.”

When hell freezes over.He was the one who had lots to apologize for to me.

“You’re more than welcome to use my father’s study if you need.” Alex appeared in the doorway, gracious and accommodating.

“I’m afraid this requires my attention at the office.” I didn’t even care if I sounded apologetic except for my father’s benefit. Alex wished he was as intimidating as Samuel Hollingsworth.

“How disappointing.” He pushed off the doorframe. “At least let me walk you to your car.”

“Not necessary, but thank you,” I said quickly. I’d managed to avoid being alone with him all night and intended to keep it that way.

“My car is waiting outside,” Father said.

Damn. I’d have to take it.

“I’ll escort you.” Alex offered his arm.

I ignored him and collected my purse from the entry table before opening the front door.

We were barely outside before he grabbed my elbow. Hard.

“Kindly remove your hand.” The words were controlled, but there was no mistaking the fury behind them.

“When we’re married, you will not run off to work at every turn.” He squeezed, leaning closer. “You will go where I say, when I say.”

I glared at him, resisting the urge to back away.

“You will please me. Understood?”

I yanked my arm, but his grip was too tight. His teeth gleamed in the moonlight when he grinned.

“No one comes above my father.”
