“Kids are scary,” Miss Adeline said. “That’s one reason I never had any.”

She cleared the air some, but I didn’t want my future sister-in-law to be down.

“I shouldn’t have pushed.” Teague yanked on his hair and disappeared after her.

“Maybe we should go first,” Lincoln said quietly.

I gripped the counter, stunned those words had come out of my brother’s mouth. Lexie looked at him as if he were an anomaly.

And I felt like an intruder on a private moment.

“Eric, let’s get these two loaded.” I motioned toward the dogs.

“Okay. Don’t forget the cooler,” he called to Lincoln as we headed for the door.

“I won’t.”

Things were happening at warp speed. Not so long ago, it had been just Lincoln, Teague, and me. Our family had grown by leaps and bounds . . . and showed no signs of stopping. Now all of us were married—well, Teague would be soon enough—and life seemed upside down.

Or maybe it was finally right side up.

Chapter Fifteen

Cal

“Any problems?”

“What? I can’t hear you over Bobby McGee.”

There was a lot of background noise.

“Are you okay?” I shouted, then looked around the back of the station to see if anyone was listening.

“Why wouldn’t I be?” she yelled back.

“Is that Cal?” I heard someone ask in the background.

Suddenly the noise was quieter.

“It is.”

“Can I talk to him?”

I didn’t recognize the voice. Where the hell was she?

“Hi, Cal. Thank you for saving me.”

And then the pieces clicked into place. Eric.

“I just unlocked a door, man. You were the brave one.”

I shuddered thinking about what the guy had been through, but was glad he was okay.

“Can you show us around the fire station sometime? Miss Adeline is always talking about how awesome it is.”

Somehow, I smiled. “Yeah. You name the time and we’ll do it.”

“Cool. Can I bring my dogs?”
