“The guys would like that. And if you want, I’ll show you how to turn on the siren in the truck.”

“Awesome.”

Family.

Eric was literally my family. I guessed technically he was my brother-in-law.

“You’ll get the special family tour,” I promised.

“Sis, can we go to the fire station today? Cal’s gonna give us the family tour,” he said proudly.

If he wanted to do it today, we could. But if I showed him around on my day off, we could go to Ma’s to eat after. She’d like to meet him. All of them.

I rubbed my forehead. How was I gonna tell her I’d gotten married without her?

“She said we can’t today. We have too many deliveries.”

I hated the disappointment in his voice.

“Let me check the schedule. I’ll let you know my days off and you can decide what works.”

“All right. I’m going to let you talk to Beau now. Bye.”

“Why would you think something is wrong?” she demanded. “Did something happen?”

“No.” I sighed and leaned against my truck. “I get off at seven in the morning. I’m going to check on Ma, then I’ll report for hair washing duty.”

A barely audible gasp escaped her. “Not necessary.”

The feel of her hair between my fingers was as vivid as if we were still in the shower. And I needed to douse those thoughts since I was at work.

“Have you seen Copper and the puppies?” Puppies. That should keep my brain off Beau’s body.

“This morning before we left,” she said.

“Anybody following you?” Her stalker father really should tamp down my desire. Oddly, it made me want to hold her even more.

“Yeah, but we’re all good.”

Brrrrriiiinnnngggg.

“Alarm’s going off. I gotta run.” My feet were already headed back to the station.

“Be careful.”

I didn’t miss the note of worry in her voice. It made me feel better and worse. I hated for her to be concerned and loved it at the same time.

“I will.”

“Ma. You up?”

It was a little after seven. She got up at four every morning. Of course she was up.

“Just in time for breakfast.”

She was in front of the stove, like always. And I was grateful for her consistency.
