She rolled us over so she was on top. “We should consummate this version before we move to the next one.”

I planted my hands on her hips. “Not until you’re healed.”

She frowned and ground against me. “You’re a martyr.”

“I’m a concerned husband.”

Her features softened. “Myhusband.”

My phone vibrated on the nightstand. Peace. Just one night of peace. Was it too much to ask for?

She stretched and handed it to me.

Zegas.

Chapter Thirty-Three

Cal

“I thoughtyou weren’t going to answer.”

Zegas was far too awake for me. It had been a long day.

“I started not to, but my brother is still in jail so I changed my mind.”

“He’s not for long,” he said gleefully.

I slid up the headboard. Beau adjusted so she straddled my thighs.

I put the phone on speaker. “About time for some good news.”

“The security footage from Joe’s fire station the night of the blaze has beenmysteriously missing.” He spoke in a mocking tone. “I filed a petition with the judge to allow one of our independent hackers—I mean, computer experts—to examine the company’s server. And what do you know?” It sounded like he beat his palm on a desk or a dashboard or something. “She found the lost video.”

“And?” I stuffed down the hope that wanted to spring free. The news could go either way.

“The fire started around four a.m. Joe was in his office staring at the wall. There’s no way he burned his house down.” The only thing missing from Zegas’s statement was theta-daat the end. Smug bastard sounded so proud of himself, but if he was right, I was pretty damn impressed myself.

“Couldn’t someone at the station that night have already corroborated that?”

It was impossible to imagine that any one of his guys wouldn’t have stood up for him.

“The footage shows him arriving about three. No one was around. He locked himself in his office and didn’t come out until six.”

I tried to let out a breath of relief, but it still seemed too good to be true. “What happens now?”

“The judge reviewed the evidence. She won’t hold an innocent man. He’s free to go.”

Beau scrambled off me and tossed my shirt onto the bed.

“I’ll go get him.”

I sat on the side of the bed and put my phone on the nightstand.

“Don’t you want to know who did it?” Zegas taunted.

“Do you get off on this?”

“Pretty much. If your wife was like mine, you’d be this way too.”
