I dial Toney’s number as we’re walking through the tunnel. I need to hear her voice. Just in case. The fucking thing doesn’t even ring. I get voicemail.

“Hey, Doc, sorry I didn’t make our date. Life happened. I told you I would try. Suppose almost dying takes precedence. I’m on my way to another meeting, but I need you to know something. I love you so fucking much. I’m not sure what will happen, but your brother and Gio are with Ains and Otto. They also have our girl. I need you all to go to Gio’s and not come out until you get the all-clear. I need you to take care of our girl because I can’t. Fuck Doc, I wish I could hear your voice.” I hear an explosion behind me. Del said she would blow the entrance so nobody could follow. Christ, I’m choking up. “Alright, I need to go. I love you, Toney. I’ll be seeing ya, Darlin’. Good-goodbye, Doc.”

I need to stop and take a beat, but I know I can’t. We have to keep moving. All I see are the backs of Roe and Drysten’s heads. All I hear are our rapid breaths and footsteps.

A hand clamps down on my shoulder softly. “We’ll see them soon,” Sully says with more confidence than a seven-foot man at a dick measuring contest surrounded by fucking midgets.

“Something we don’t know is at play here. I can feel it in my bones.”

“We can’t think that way. We need to focus on what we know, deal with that, and be ready to roll if the punches come.” He gives me a little shove. “We have no reason to think this next bit will go anyway except forward. You showing your face at this drop will show the cartel that you are on top of it. That should ease Alverez and buy us time to figure out the next steps. Remember, he likes you.”I

“I know you’re right. I just—it’s different. I never expected to have to—any of this. It’s fucked up.” I can feel the tension in my back. If I come through this, I will have to soak in the Goddamn tub for a fucking month.

We make it through the tunnel pretty fucking quick. Finn only had time to grab the van. He is in the driver’s seat, tapping his fucking fingers on the steering wheel. Now, four of us are hiding in the back of that same Goddamned van covered in fucking blood, waiting on the skinny little fucker.

Finn finally opens the back of the van outside of Cosco with a pallet of fucking baby wipes, alcohol, towels, and fucking sweats. “What the fuck is with all the sweats? I can’t hide my shit with that!”

“I got what I could find-sorry. I knew I had to be fast, as it is we’re gonna be late, and that’s with me flying up the interstate.” He starts tossing everything in the back straight at us. “I got baby powder, too. It’ll help with deodorizing. My sister says that good baby wipes will clean damn near anything.”

“Does your sister know Mister-Fucking-Clean?” Drysten’s comment makes me chuckle.

“No, but she managed to sanitize a woodchipper with these babies after Rónán put that hired bitch Senan Ó’Heanraig through it, so I think she might be onto something,” Finn answers flatly.

“I always wanted to try that.” Delia has been so quiet I forgot I had the comm in.

“That’s because you’re a twisted bitch.” I shake my head. “Hurry the fuck up. I don’t need my dick swinging in the fucking wind.”

No matter how much scrubbing we do on our kuttes, they are still blood-covered. “If we get out of this, Ains will kill us as she does ninety percent of our laundry,” I mutter, still scrubbing.

“Silly rabbit, we girls have been getting blood out of clothes since we were twelve. We have our ways.” Seems knowing I‘m her brother has not curbed Del’s inappropriate conversations.

“Saint,” Sully says softly, looking at Finn as he goes for the driver's seat. I know what he wants. He wants Finn elsewhere.

I’m sidetracked by a giggle, “What the fuck, is Ciara with you guys?”

“Um—huh—yeah, funny story there. I blew up the only way out.” Delia snickers. “Were in the armory safe as houses, I assure you.”

“Where the fuck is Crux? Who’s going to the Doc?”

“He and Lachlan are making a path, but it may take a while. They’re trying to not blow the whole joint up with us inside.”

“For fuck’s sake. You keep her safe. If someone comes in with harmful intent, you fucking kill them!” I growl. “Finn, go boost a car and get the Doc. If something happens to her, it’s your head I’m fucking taking. Feel me?”

“Y—you want me to go?” He regrets it even as he says it, then quickly corrects it. “I won’t let you down.” He and Sully glance at each other. Yeah, they are definitely into something, even if it ain’t fucking—yet.

“Hey kid—” I call out, and Finn glances back. “You do this, and you got your patch. Same thing I told Del and Em. Goes for you too.”

“I don’t carry.” He looks seriously at me. “I can fight and shoot, but I don’t actually carry.”

“Doc has ya covered. Tell her I sent you and told her to give you one or fuck, maybe five.” Finn nods at me before running off. “Let’s get the fuck out of here.” Drysten shifts to the driver’s seat, and Sully takes to talking points as we hit the interstate.

We hit traffic, so it takes about two hours, and in that time, Sully has reminded me about five hundred million times to keep my shit icy.

“Today is about smooth sailing, not more bloodshed.” He repeats before we climb out of the van.

I look at each of my brothers and know the ones in my ear are listening close. “Today was fucked, and we have more fucked up shit to clear up before we’re good. Thank you for having my back.”
