As we ride up onto the boat ramp, I can smell wildflowers. I know there aren’t any fields around the marina, so I’m pretty confused but pleasantly surprised. Kris has such a smile on his face that I know this man has gotten up to something.
“Kris?” I draw out his name as he helps me off the back and then lifts me up princes style. A kinder lift that I’m sure he hasn’t even noticed. Usually, I’m over his shoulder getting my ass bitten or playfully cracked.
“I have dessert in the bedroom, and no, it’s not my cock-well I mean-” he laughs as I smack his chest.
“Horn dog.”
“For you only.” He carries me past the playroom where Bowzer and Cat are screwing around, not paying us a lick of attention, and straight for our stateroom. The smell of flowers gets stronger until he opens the door. I’m impressed he didn’t drop me on my head.
The door swings, and in the low light from the setting sun, I see it’s lit with a ton of flameless candles, and all around are bouquets of wildflowers. All above the bed like a canopy, petals on the floor, it’s intoxicating, but in the best way. My eyes burn from the tears that he’s now kissing away. We move, and he bends, lifting up a little brown box.
“The main event.”
“What did you do?” I eye him suspiciously. “You’re making my makeup run.”
“Open it, Tink.” He sits on the petal-covered mattress, me still cradled in his arms.
I open the box with shaky hands. There are donuts and a card that says All you need is Love and Donuts with a ring on the card. My mouth drops open, seeing the huge heart-shaped diamond.
“Is this what I think it is?”
“Put it on, Nicolette (MIDDLE NAME) Barrett, say yes, and make me happier than I have ever been. Say yes, and I promise that I will spend the rest of our lives striving to be the man you deserve. Say yes so I can tell the world that you are going to be all mine.”
“I’m already yours, yes.”
