I SHIFT IN the uncomfortable metal chair, wincing when the slight movement digs the set of zip ties pinning me to the seat deeper into my wrists and ankles.

The block walls of the industrial building I’m hidden inside are as cold looking as the air filling it, and I have to clench my teeth tight together to keep them from chattering.

The least Frederick could have done was taken me somewhere with heat.

But I guess he’s not too focused on keeping me comfortable, especially since I’m pretty sure he thinks he’s going to kill me.

I’m not going to be the one to tell him he’s wrong.

I’ll let that be Andre’s surprise.

“You don’t look worried, Duchess.” Frederick paces my way. “It’s almost like you think he’s going to come for you.”

I keep my mouth shut and force my expression to stay as blank as I can manage.

“Maybe you’re not as smart as I thought then.” He leans over me, tipping his head as his eyes move across my face. “I tried to warn you. Tried to tell you that Andre only cares about himself.” He comes closer, pressing his nose to my neck as he inhales deeply against my skin. “But you didn’t listen to me, did you?”

I really got lucky when Andre stepped in that night and saved me from having to go home with this guy.

He might not be hateful on the eyes, but Frederick is freaking insane.

“Lucky for you I’m a forgiving man.” He straightens and circles behind me, running one hand through my hair as he moves. “And I’m willing to make a deal with you.”

How generous of him.

I stay silent as he continues on, filling the room with so many words that it becomes obvious he really likes the sound of his own voice. “It seems wasteful to kill you,” he reaches my side and his eyes drag down my body, “even if you’re not as valuable as you once were.”

Now he’s starting to piss me off.

“But I’m sure Andre hasn’t had enough time to completely wear you out.” He reaches out to grab my boob, gripping it hard as he twists it through the layers I’m still thankfully wearing.

He’s trying to intimidate me. Scare me.

It’s not going to work.

He doesn’t realize I’m not the same girl he saw on stage that night.

Doesn’t seem to know that everything has changed.

Do I feel a little like throwing up still? Yes.

Will I do it?

Probably not.

But the fear and isolation that ruled my life are gone.

He thinks I’m not worried because I believe Andre will come for me, but that’s only part of the story.

I do know Andre will come for me, but more than that I know I’ll be able to get through whatever happens until then.

Because I always do. I’ve proven time and time again that I will do whatever it takes to get where I want to go.

And right now I want to go back to Andre. Back to my mother.

“Let me see exactly what he took from me.” Frederick pulls open the front of my mother’s coat before ripping the top of my dress to expose my breasts, then he stands back, eyes fixed on my bare chest. “Small, but not bad.” He pinches one nipple hard before slapping it. “At least they’re perky.” He smacks my other boob. “Nothing worse than small, saggy tits.”
