Only this time will be the last.

Andre comes in after he finishes his call and rests his hand on my back again, slowly stroking along my spine as her breathing slows more and more.

Then stops.

The moment is quiet and unremarkable outside of the fact that it’s the last one I share with her.

The world keeps spinning and time keeps moving, even though I was once so sure it wouldn’t.

I was positive my life would stop when hers did.

But that’s not how these things work.

I don’t get to give up. I don’t get to give in.

I have to move forward. Put on a brave face and take everything as it comes. It’s the only option I have.

So that’s what I will do.

It’s what I’ve always done.

I press a kiss to her cheek. Tell her all the truths I know.

That she was kind.

Generous.

Loving.

The best mother I could have ever asked for.

That I hope I make her as proud as she made me.

Then I let Andre take me home, keeping me close at his side.

Where I know I belong.
