But not for long.

The slow and steady click of high heels pulls my chest tight, making it hard to breathe.

Paisley steps into view, one long leg peeking out through the high slit where the dress wraps into place.

The dress is perfect on her. The deep V in the front cuts almost to her waist, revealing enough skin to catch attention, but not so much that I’ll have to gouge anyone’s eyes out. The color compliments her eyes and the fabric flows around her body with each move she makes. It’s the first time I’ve seen her in a dress that properly fits her and I can’t seem to make myself look away. “You are stunning.”

She smiles, running one hand along the front. “I feel really pretty.”

“Pretty doesn’t come close to describing you, Duchess.” I reach out to take her hand and immediately pull her close. “And I can promise you it won’t be me that draws everyone’s eyes our way tonight.”

She smooths her palm over my chest. “I don’t know. You look pretty good too.”

I don’t usually worry about how I show up at the club with no name. I don’t particularly care about the time I spend there.

But tonight is different.

Tonight is the first night I won’t be coming alone. It’s the first night Paisley will really see what my life involves.

And after tonight, there will be no question in anyone’s minds about the place she’s supposed to have taken in my life.

“Everyone we see tonight needs to believe that you like me, Duchess.” I slide one hand down her side to palm her hip through the smooth fabric. “Is that something you think you can accomplish?”

I know she’s still upset about the diner, and probably a hundred other things.

I need to know that she’s capable of putting that aside and pretending she craves my touch.

Needs it.

Paisley’s eyes drop to my mouth. She leans closer and presses her soft lips to mine, the tips of her fingers coming to rest against my face as she sucks my lower lip between her teeth, pulling it out before releasing it, the sensation of the bite one I feel in my cock as much as I do on my mouth.

Her gaze moves over mine. “I think I can manage.”

I reach up to run my thumb across her bare lips. “Be careful what you do tonight, Duchess. No one would bat an eye if I spread your legs and took you in front of them.”

Her eyes widen. “Are people going to be having sex right in front of us?”

“Stranger things have happened.” I try to take her hand in mine but end up with a tube of something instead. I lift it between us and raise a brow in question.

“I don’t wear lipstick, so you have to hold my ChapStick.” She motions to the front of her dress. “The fabric of this thing isn’t very forgiving and it looks like I have a little chubby when I put it in my pocket.”

I slip the tube into my pants. “Anything else you need me to carry?”

She glances back toward her mother’s room. “Do I need my phone?”

“Tamara is under strict instructions to call me if your mother needs anything.” I smooth my fingers down the side of her face, trying to ease the pinch of worry collecting in Paisley’s eyes. “But she assured me your mother will be more than fine while we’re gone.”

It’s an exaggeration. Tamara and LaShawn both explained their concerns about Rhonda’s condition to me, but that’s a conversation I will have to have with Paisley another time.

She leans into my touch. “Thank you.”

“You don’t have to thank me.” I don’t pretend I don’t know what she means. “Keeping your mother well will make you happy, and it’s in my best interest to do what I can to make you happy.” It’s not the only reason I have, but it’s the only one I will ever share. “Especially considering I will do many things that have the opposite effect.”

Paisley laughs a little. “That’s definitely true.” She takes a deep breath, straightening her spine. “I guess we should get going.”

I’m suddenly uninterested in taking her out tonight. “We don’t have to go.”

“Isn’t that the point of all of this?” Paisley adjusts the square in my pocket. “For people to see us together?”
